What do you pay your babysitter?

I interviewed a  girl from my church yesterday and she says that she does not want to impose on anyone in this economy, so she is leaving it up to the person to decide.  How thoughtful, but I want to make sure I pay her properly. 

 

Any suggestions? I have never done this.  I have a 10 month old. 

I also am thinking of giving her something on her b-day, graduation, Christmas etc. if it all works out.   She is in high school.

I try to give $10 an hour. Sometimes less because money is tight but when I babysat I was making around that amount so I think that is pretty fair.

A lot of sitters want $12-15 an hour now. I pay my sister $10/hr plus gas money since she lives an hour away. For a high school student I think $10/hr is fair.

I agree with Mel- $10/ hr for a high school student is good. It's more than minimum wage.
