Exclusive Pumpers

What made you decide to just pump?  I am really making total efforts at this breast feeding thing.  I have had some success, but lately, DD just keeps trying to pull off.  I try burping her and then she gets really furious because she wants to eat.  Then I put her back on and the whole process starts all over again.  I actually start leaking while I am trying to burp her.  Any suggestions on this?  The pediatrician recommended that I not pump right now because she said that she wants to make sure that she is getting the fatty milk.  Anyway, give me your pointers.  Thanks!

Re: Exclusive Pumpers

  • I started to EP because DS stopped latching, lost a lot of weight while we tried to correct the problem - his jaundice got worse, was readmitted to the hospital. He needed to eat, wouldn't latch, I needed to get the milk out of my very engorged breasts so I started to pump. Giving DS breastmilk was very important to me and I just do it however I had to. For him, that means pumping. I started pumping every 2 hours, then went to 3 (about 3 wks old) then 4....so on and so forth. GL with whatever you decide to do!

  • i still BFd, but pumped more often.  DD was a VERY fussy newborn.  we weren't sure if she was getting enough so i started pumping.  i felt better knowing she was getting so many ounces.  anyway, do you have any idea if your flow is too much, too little, just right?  i think i pumped for the 1st time when DD was 9 days old.  and if you do pump, pump long enough to get the hindmilk - you should pump at least 20 mins.  good luck!
  • I had to pump cause DD never did latch correctly. I saw 3 lactation consultants and we couldn't get her latched correctly and even when she was latched she wasn't sucking hard enough to get enough milk. She wasn't gaining enough weight so we had to supplement. She took off about 4 or 5 layers of skin before I gave up and started pumping. My supply was never enough so I had to supplement with formula and now she is completely formula fed. I never leaked like that and I was never engorged so I don't think I made enough milk either.
  • DS was like this for 3 or 4 weeks...fighting at every feeding, but wanting to eat.  I would stop to calm him down and then try to get him to latch again.  Even with all of this, he still didn't get a bottle until 4 weeks.  Keep trying.

I don't get the pedi's comment about not pumping yet b/c she won't get the fatty milk.  Aren't you going to pump and them give it to her?

I dont get the pedi's comment either because, yes, I was planning on giving her the pumped milk. Very odd.  I guess she thought I was going to save it for later...that is not the case yet.  I will have to do that once I return to work, but not right now.  I am off for a total of 12 weeks and still have about 10 left.  I am not going to give up.  I just hate watching the poor thing scream when I know she is hungry.  Thank you for the encouraging words.  It makes me feel better knowing that others are having these similar problems.

You are welcome.  I wanted to hear things like this because I almost gave up and I am soooooo glad that I didn't.  Is she content between feedings and just screaming when you try to feed her?  Try changing positions and make sure you aren't eating anything that might upset her tummy.

At one month, I did give myself a break by letting him have one formula bottle a day...like if we were out or someone was over.  They averaged about 5 a week.
