The dilation and curettage procedure is called a D&C. The D stands for dilation, which means enlarging. Curettage (the C) means scraping. Together, this procedure involves expanding or enlarging the entrance of a woman's uterus so that a thin, sharp instrument can scrape or suction away the lining of the uterus and take tissue samples.
I am SO sorry for your loss. D&C is usually done for miscarriages. Basically if you don't want to wait to naturally miscarry then you can have this procedure done. Some woman have D&E's also.
Sometimes they do a D & E and it is the same process except instead of scraping the contents out they suction them out (evacuation). I had 2 D & E if you ever need info on them.
My placenta came out shortly after delivering my son, so I was told I didn't need a D&C. After reading about it, I guess it was a blessing. I'm so terribly sorry for anyone who has to go through something like that.
It's actually really not that bad. It's a short procedure, they put you under, and there's not too much pain afterward (I didn't have much, anyway). The emotional aspects of miscarriage are far worse than the physical discomfort of a D&C.
I agree, it isn't really that painful because you're asleep but you may have some cramping for a few days after. Your heart hurts more than anything else. I'm sorry you have to have this done. ((HUGS))

I had mine yesterday. Like pp said, the actual procedure is very quick and you are asleep through the entire thing, even the getting into the stirrups part.
For me, the worst part was actually having a reason to do it.

DNC is the Democratic National Convention.
A D&C is a dilation & curettage. They dilate your cervix and use a looped tool to empty the uterus.?
----Thank you----

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks that!?
