bottle help please...

Hi, we just registered at BRU tonight and are totally confused by the bottle choices.  I plan on breast feeding mostly and am using the MedelaPIS which I have bottles for...just don't know anything about how good/horrible they are.  Option #1...get more Medela.  Option #2- my husband liked the look of the Born Free glass bottles.  I don't know why glass would be better or worse and I think they have four components to the bottle instead of just three???  Anyone with advise who is using these?  Option #3- Playtex Vent Air (I don't want drop-ins... too much plastic waste)  They seem easy and affordable, but again I don't know of anyone who has used them.  Thanks for any insight you may be able to proviede me...

  • We use Born Free glass bottles and I LOVE them.

  • We use the 5 oz Medela bottles.  I never see others post that they use Medela - always Drop-ins, Born-Free, etc.  Don't know why - we have no problems using the Medela ones and they fit right to the pump.
  • In my experience. I wouldn't buy too many of a specific kind until you start trying them. The medela ones we tried first and I planned on using those too since they worked with the pump etc...well, they really stink as feeding bottles cause they leak and the nipple flow is WAY too fast for an infant.

I had to do some trial and error and eventually ended up with the Avent BPA free ones as being the best for DS and love them. If I could start over I would have tried the playtex vent airs because they are also bpa free and way cheaper than Avent and Born Free. Dr. Browns are too but they are a PIA to clean I hear.

My best advice is just wait till you have a chance to try some without buying up or receiving too many that you might not be able to return.

  • I use the Playtex Vent Air and love them! I just hate washing all of the components to it. I also use the Avent bottles but I feel that the playtex bottles decrease DD gas.

  • Definately wait before buying a stash.  We bought bottles on a trial basis until we felt comfortable that they were the "one" for DS.  We ended up getting Dr. Brown's. Yes, there are many parts, but they sell dishwasher setups that hold each individual part and it makes it much easier to clean.
  • agree with pp - if you want register for small sets of bottles and keep the receipts, don't do the big sets, because chances are you'll end up using more than one type of bottle. ?We used avent initially, but ~ 2months old she started refusing them, i think she didn't like the nipple. ?Now we use the playtex ventaire - love the bottle, she gets very little air, but is a little bit of a pain to wash the parts. ?That I feel is more than balanced by her not spitting up all over me because of swallowing air. ?Plus they're not that expensive. ?Just get the wide mouth (they are designed for people who breast feed so the nipple is similar to yours).
  • We also use Dr. Brown and love them.  The parts really aren't that bad to clean.  You kinda just get used to cleaning them.  I started out BFing so when I got the wide neck bottles to avoid nipple confusion.  DD did great switching back and forth without a problem.

  • I use the born free. They have a 2 part venting system inside. So, you have the bottle, nipple, and nipple ring, and the 2 part vent to wash.

I have the plastic bottles though. I didn't want glass b/c I was afraid of dropping them and breaking them. I have already knocked coutless bottles off the sink as they were sitting there waiting to be washed.

  • I'm guessing since you mention the Medela PISA that you're planning on BFing and pumping. In that case, I'd say you want to get at LEAST enough bottles to cover one day of feedings. Because washing bottles more than once a day is a PITA. So I'd say buy at least 12 bottles to start with.

A lot of people like the glass bottles but I'm a clutch and drop things a lot so glass isn't a good idea for me. We started with the Evenflo comfi bottles but DS got a lot of gas and spit up a lot. We switched to the Dr. Brown's bottles (the plastic BPA free kind) because they came so highly recommended. Now, they are a huge PITA to clean because there are so many little parts, but we've noticed a huge difference in how much DS spits up and has gas. He's a lot less fussy. So, I think it's worth it. Also, make sure you buy low-flow or stage 1 nipples with whatever bottle you get. A newborn can't handle a bottle that has a fast stream of milk coming from it.  My last tip is to think twice before purchasing a wide-neck bottle because you might have trouble making it fit inside most bottle warmers and some diaper bag bottle areas. Basically, a lot of stuff just isn't designed for the wide bottles.
