Reflux Question

My DS is 6.5 weeks old and is on zantac and mylanta now for reflux, yesterday the dr just increase his zantac dose because his feedings have been horrible, screams through each one and takes me an hour sometimes to just get in 3oz....the best feeds are when he is falling asleep at the bottle.  I feel like he gets worse though, i am at my wits end with these screaming feedings...any advice...how do you feed them when they are screaming so much, he is hungry and wants the bottle but as soon as he starts to get a taste, he screams!!!

Re: Reflux Question

  • It's very hard to feed the refluxer that doesn't want to eat because it hurts...chances are you will need a stronger med now.  Zantac only worked for about 2 weeks for us... ask your dr. about a ppi such as prilosec or prevacid.  Do this sooner than later, because things will not improve on their own and you don't want a total feeding aversion to develop that will be hard to work through.  One thing that helped us when DS was hysterical trying to eat, is to run the vacuum cleaner. It always calms him down and he would eat at least a little , which is better than nothing.

  • Thank you for this post I am going through the same problem right now. I was crying through his last feeding. SO I feel your pain. If the little one is a sleep I go get a bottle ready and then get him up and feed him without him really waking up. If you ever want to email me to chat I would love to talk

  • For my DS the magic bullet has been Prevacid 2x/day.  He still screams occasionally, but not nearly like he used to.  He also takes Reglan.
