question about tummy sleeping

in the morning, for the last month at least, my DD has slept on my chest from 7-9AM. I never considered that tummy sleeping but maybe it is.

the other day, my MIL put her down on the bed on her tummy and she slept so soundly- an hour or so napy. do you think it is dangerous to do that if i am watching her? she is 9 weeks old. i am obviously concerned about SIDS and don't want to put her at risk.

Re: question about tummy sleeping

  • DD has been sleeping on her tummy since she was 6 weeks old.  It seems to help a little with her reflux.  She has good head control and we have a motion sensor monitor so this makes me a little more comfortable with it.

  • DS has been sleeping on his tummy since about a week ago.  I really didn't want to do it, but it is the only way he will sleep without being held.  For my own sanity, I had to.  He has good head control, though, so I am not too worried.
  • my sister's friend's baby died from SIDS a couple of years ago. i am extremely paranoid about it and would only let DS sleep on his tummy if he was on me or DH and we could constantly monitor his breathing. for me, it is not worth the risk because i know that SIDS is not a myth. i don't think the reasoning of, "well we all slept on our tummies and we're fine" is good enough. until they can roll over, they should be placed on their backs to sleep. i'm highly opinionated on this issue because i've seen the worst that can happen.

pp mentioned a movement monitor. we didn't have one of those, but i've heard great things about them.
