3rd Trimester

F/U: So, I'm home on bedrest...again

Hey ladies!

Here's the update: went to the Dr's yesterday afternoon with these lovely cramps I was having. They never got intense but they didnt go away either. Dr said my bp was up....I told her it had something to do with me freaking out about the cramps. She said I was having contractions but my cervix hasnt dilated(sp) or effaced but she put me on Terbutaline ((which I'm hating)) to be safe, pelvic rest and a day of bed rest. If I dont cramp than I can go back to work because I do a desk job that isnt demanding. I had some cramping last night and some this morning even though I've taken a few doses of Terbutaline but not near as bad as yesterday.

The most shocking thing she told me was that it would be ok for me to deliver in 2wks...that would put me at 35 wks. I thought full term was 37 but according to my Dr, 35wks the lungs are mature enough. 37wks is better and 38wks is best but if I delivered in 2 weeks it'd be ok....that freaks me out!

  • terbutaline = not fun!

in the end it's your call to make if you're uncomfortable delivering at 35w, but your doctor wouldn't suggest it without good reason, and wouldn't do it until they were certain that the benefits outweigh the risks!

hope your cramping goes away and your BP improves!

  • dont freak out about it chica! I was on bedrest and terbutaline from 33 weeks to 37 weeks (they told me 37 weeks bc I had to get to 37 weeks to be eligible to deliver at the birth center). I figured Id go into labor shortly after...well I had one false alarm of contractions all day and half the night but I was only 1 cm dilated and my cervix was still thick. Im 38 weeks today and it looks like little man is content staying in there to 40 weeks if I leave it up to him lol. Ive lost hope of going early now and figure Ill go 40 weeks plus...if not then it will be a pleasant suprise!

My midwife said terbutaline is almost always just on the side of caution bc they dont want to find out what might happen if they dont stop/slow down the contractions. She said plenty of patients go on to have full term or overdue babies.
  • FWIW, I had DD at 34 weeks and she was fine.  I had PTL problems from 25 weeks on so at 34 they let me deliver.  She was 5 lbs 5 oz, 19 inches long and perfectly healthy.  No NICU time or oxygen needed.

I'm sure your baby will be fine when you deliver.  GL

  • I am on bed rest and on Terb. and it sucks. I told DH that after the doctor lets me off of bed rest and the meds, Faith won't want to come anymore and she will be overdue. haha
  • After 4 days in the hospital due to PTL, I'm on Terb and bed rest too.  They gave me the steriod shots at 32wks to develop her lungs, just in case.  At my apt yesterday doc said that if I went into labor they wouldn't even consider stopping it (I'm 35wks).  The baby is 5lbs12oz and would probably be just fine.  The Terb gets better, but it took me over a week to tolerate it (had aweful headaches and racing heart).  I still have cramping on the Terb but it's much more mild and contractions are no longer timeable.  I am supposed to stop taking it at 37wks and I'm picturing going into labor after the first missed dose....but after reading some other posts here I'm probably wrong.  Though my cervix is shortening fairly quickly so maybe I'll luck out and be right at 37wks.  Good luck to you, hope the cramping subsides and your handling the terb alright.

  • You should get your info into the bedrest mama checkin- even if you are modified.

I know how you feel about being worried about the time.  I am 34 weeks and 3 days now- and I started having contractions again last night that luckily went away.  Almost got sent into L and D and my doc said that they may let me deliver if I truly go into labor.  They told me that last week in L & D- 34 weeks they don't stop labor because the baby will be OK.  It is reassuring to see the other post here about the baby at 34 weeks.  I still want her to stay in as long as possible- still freaks me out too!
