2nd Trimester

Dumb Question, but I can't find the answer on google...

...so I will dare to post here!

It's about Group B Strep...if you were born sick from this infection, that does NOT mean that you are more likely to test positive for GBS during pregnancy...right?  One has nothing to do with the other...am I correct in that understanding?

 Thanks in advance.

  • I don't think one has anything to do w/the other: if you were treated as an infant w/antibiotics, I would be surprised if it has any impact whether or not you are positive now.

ETA: Being a GBS carrier is relatively common, so your doctor/MW is still going to want to know definitively so they can recommend whether or not you need antibiotics during labor.

  • Group Beta Strep can be found in different mucus membranes, just b/c you had it before, does not mean it is located in your vaginal fluid. They will do a culture in your 3rd trimester to test for it. If you are positive, you will be put on antibiotics when you go to the hospital to deliver.
