As a Canadian, whenever I go to the US forget whether it's the south or the north and I order a tea...... I have to get VERY EXPLICIT with the person who is serving me. HOT, from a TEA BAG..... I often get blank stares.
It's even worse when I ask for vinegar for my french fries or my scrambled eggs.?
lmao! I'm from Texas and sweet tea is definately always on the menu.... and in some places.. they have it where you can buy it by the gallon before you leave. God i love the south!!
never understood this.....I thought it was called iced tea?! That is until I went for a visit to a southern state and was served sweet tea....yummy...although I still call it iced tea!
i never understood the non sweet stuff...and now this is gonna be offensive to some....especially in a country with so many overweight folks and a way wider assortment of junk in the grocery stores than in canada, it just makes no sense.
i do love sweet tea and fried okra, and fried pickles and fried green tomatoes, well pretty much anything fried is good in my books!!
When DH and I first moved to NC 4 years ago, he ordered Iced tea, thinking he would get unsweetened since that is all we had in NY. Haha, the look on his face when he took a big gulp of his first sweet tea, priceless!
I'm in Indiana and even though we have sweet tea at most restaurants, it's just not the same as the south!! The school I went to in South Carolina had the BEST sweet tea!

I'm from the north, and I never did understand why the iced tea at restaurants is unsweetened. You can't (easily) mix sugar into cold iced tea!
haha agreed that it's icky trying to stir sugar in COLD tea and that's why i don't go near it in restaurants- but there are lots of people out there that are diabetic or don't like sugar, so i guess that they leave it out so everyone can drink it -and not have to make 2 separate batches- pure laziness
most tea in the North is instant tea mix, it's not brewed tea- so it never gets hot to begin with lol
i agree that nothing trumps real sweet tea but unfortunately you can not get it here- my mom makes it thankfully
See I could never be a southerner. I like my tea straight up black, and I have never had fried okra. Actually I believe that I have never had okra in any shape or form.
But you all still lurve me right?

Call me naive, but I've NEVER been to a resturant where they served non-sweet tea when you asked for "tea". Then again, I've never been above the Mason-Dixon line (not proud about that- it just never happened).

It's so funny how different we all (and our surroundings) are. I read this and thought "What is black tea?"

Re: the south = sweet tea served in restaurants

I have been known to walk out of a restaurant when I asked for sweet tea & they brought me unsweet & a pack of Equal.
Agree,
sweet tea = sugar was added while tea was HOT. Thus, sugar melts. Therefore you are not drinking sand.
Fried okra AND fried squash

::dies::
when i make sweet tea at my house i have to make a pitcher for me, and a pitcher for dh. he's from iowa, and he cant handle REAL sweet tea.
Sorry...I am still trying to figure out how to quote. Anyway, there is nothing worse than unsweet tea and artificial sweetener!

Sweet tea is now served in McDonald's in NY...and its mighty goood to me! Reminds of my time spent on vacation in the south.

A meal in the South without sweet tea is illegal.
We have a gallon of sweet tea in the house at all times. It's all hubby drinks.
Its best with fried pork chops, homemade mashed potatoes, fried okra, green beans, and cornbread.
eww eww eww! I am definitely from the southwest...not "Southerner"....but no sweet tea for me....gimme that good ol sun tea!!!
Anyone wanna trade some fried okra for some good ol tamales!!!! I love me some good ol southern food.
I now want some Tex-mex for lunch. Yummy!
