Name opinion....I'm torn.

Okay, I'm kinda torn here and would love some insight/opinions. We have a son that is 4 years old. His name is Nicolas but we have always called him Nico. It's what everyone calls him. We are expecting our second little boy in June and have chosen Luca for his name. My question is...do you think we should do "Lucas" and call him Luca or just Luca? Does Luca sound like nickname to you? Do you think he should have a "proper" name like Nico does (i.e. Nicolas)? I'm so torn. I love the name Luca and am tempted to just go with that but I've heard people say I should do Lucas as it's more "proper" I'm so torn!!!!

Thanks!

  • No!

If you love the name Luca (which is a "proper" name by itself), and would call him Luca, then go ahead and just call him Luca!

  • I say do whatever YOU want - Luca is a full name itself - so if that's what you like (which I do - I think it's a great name), go with it.

  • I would go with Lucas, just because it sounds more proper. Luca sounds cute for a nickname though
  • Every child does not need both a formal name and a nickname. If you like Luca, and that's what you are going to call him, I'd leave it at that and skip Lucas.

  • I think Luca is a great name all by itself!
  • My niece's name is Lucabella and we call her Luca...I like it for a boy or girl but I think I would name him Luca.
  • If you don't ever plan on calling him by the full name Lucas, I would just call him Luca. It's a very nice name.

  • This is a pet peeve of mine. If you dont want his name to be Lucas, then why would you name him Lucas? Theres nothing wrong with the name Luca, in fact I find it adorable.

  • I like Luca. Luca sounds like an odd nickname for Lucas since you would only leave off one letter.
  • I think of Lucas and Luca as two different names. For Lucas I would think of Luc for short. I like the name Luca and think is is a proper name. Go with it!!

  • Go with Luca. Don't second guess yourself if you love the name!
  • Luca definitely...I love it!
  • Well it's a personal pet peeve of mine to name a child something you don't plan to call them. If you know you are going to call him Luca, then name him Luca! I don't understand the point of naming a child something you don't ever plan to call them.

  • Luca is fine. It's a perfectly good Italian name.

  • I vote Lucas with the nickname Luca... I always think of them being an adult and having that name.

Eh.  When he's an adult, if he doesn't like Luca, he can choose to go by Luke.  By the time our kids are grown, the names of the generation ahead of them and their contemporaries will be so different from now.  Luca will be the most normal name compared to all the Trystyns and other abusers of the y!

ETA- I love "Luca" for a boy.

  • haha luca and nicholas are my boy names if we have a boy! Wink

luca is perfectly fine as a full name- in fact, it i think it is a totally different name from lucas

luca sounds more italian/greek rather than lucas

  • Whereas this is a fairly uncommon name I don't think anyone would know what the proper or longer name is for Luca, it's not like Michael and Mike. I am a fan of giving children the proper name for later in life so they may want to use it for professional reasons, but lIke I said it's a fairly unusual name so I don't think anyone would know the difference.
  • If you love Luca go with it!!! ?
  • Luca is a proper name, IMO...I love it. ?It's my niece's name: a little unconventional for a girl, but it fits her and I absolutely love it. (BTW, Nico is v. popular where we live, too.)
