I don't understand how there can be so many people that can't spell simple words or distinguish between homonyms. ?It scares me that these people are breeding.?
I'm sure I make mistakes sometimes, but I try to be really careful! I don't think some people have ANY idea of the spelling and grammar errors that they make!

I hire receptionists as part of my job. People who know how to spell are hard to find. I actually have created a spelling list of words frequently used. The last batch of applicants failed. I put "a lot" on the test. Out of ten applicants, no one could make "a lot" two different words. They all spelled "alot". Ugh.
I had to type a paper for my younger sister the other day, she is in 9th grade (she is an HONOR student) Her spelling mistakes were so bad I actually thought she was trying to be funny. She spelled "August" "Augest". When I called her on her mistakes, she acted like I was crazy because , "noone cares, everyone has spellcheck anyway"..she has a point but it's still sad

I rely on spellcheck quite a bit but there are many words that it doesn't catch. ?I previously worked with engineering contracts and environmental reports, every other word would be underlined with a squiggle. ?I had to turn spellcheck off to avoid having a seizure while I was?proofing?the documents.

I'm doing the best I can to get rid of those errors! I teach 9th LA, and my students aren't allowed to ever use "a lot" for that reason! Besides, there are so many other possibilities that are better and much more descriptive.
What kills me is the attitude toward spelling and grammar - that it really doesn't matter. When it does count, like you looking for job applicants, it's way too late to do anything about it!
The one that has lately been making me want to rip my eyeballs out is actually a grammar mistake.
I hate, hate, hate when people write "My DH and I." under a picture or an equivalent type mistake. It's okay to use "me" in a sentence - in fact, it's grammatically correct many times!!!!!! Sheesh.

Amen sister! My personal pet peeve is when people mix up contractions and possessives...your or you're. It drives me crazy! I was an engineering major in college. If I can spell, anyone can!
I agree. I have Sesame Street words of the day in my classes after they turn in assignments (undergrads-freshmen through seniors). Inevitably, the following words are included:
separate not seperate
their/there/they're
its/it's
whether/weather
definitely not definately
your/you're
They're too lazy to spellcheck. But they're told that they have to learn to spell words in the text for 2 reasons: 1) there's no spellcheck on exams and 2) some words we use aren't even recognized by Word as actual words (e.g. operationalization).
Re: Learn to spell, please. I beg you.
I *here* ya! lol.

My Blog

Most people between the ages of 20 and 30ish were taught Whole Word Language and never got phonics, and now... can't spell!
What kills me is there/their and heard/herd.
