2nd Trimester

No more Prenatals??

So I went to the Dr. today and was talking to her about the sample prenates she gave me last time.  She said that if I want she can write me a prescription for them, but that I really don't need to be taking them since I'm not anemic and am a very low risk PG.  Obviously I trust her, but I feel strange not choking down a horse pill anymore... anyone else told not to worry about them anymore??

We also found out our Big US will be on the 23rd... YAY!!!

Re: No more Prenatals??

  • if she doesn't want to write you a script you could always just take a target brand prenatal... This is just me, but I feel better taking them every day because there are certainly days where I eat not so well, and I feel like the vitamin helps in that dept.

  • you could always take 2 flintstone's chewables a day instead if you are worried. much nicer going down!
  • I didn't ask my dr about this at my last appointment, but a girlfriend of mine stopped taking hers after 1st tri.  I don't mind taking them, and figure it can't hurt if I continue.  So on that note, I'll probably still take them.

  • your baby needs the extra folic acid- i can't imagine any OB saying not to take PNVs!

you can take regular OTC PNV's and that will work fine- or take a regular multi vit + an extra folic acid.... but seriously- why would you NOT want to give your baby all it needs - by just swallowing a vit every day??

  • That would seem strange to me too!  My Dr. asks about whether I'm taking vitamins every time I see her.

In fact, she got a little snotty with me when I told her I had stopped taking the DHA/EPA liquid gels that come with the OneADay Prenatals.  I had told her that I stopped taking them because I am constantly burping up a fish taste when I take them and her reply, "Well, it's your baby..."  Geeeshhh.  I could have used something a little more factual to go on regarding the benefits of the pills to determine whether or not I'd actually continue them.

  • I think I would feel weird not taking ANY vitamins...I currently take One A Day prenatals. They cost $13 for a 30-day supply at Walmart. I'd rather be safe than sorry when it comes to getting all the vitamins/nutrients in them.

I hate this too!  I take my Omega 3 pills just before I go to bed and therefore skip the fishy burps!  That might help.

I tried before bed and, for a while, it worked!  Then, I started waking up because of them.  Fish pills are no fun :)

  • My doctor insisted on the prenatal vitamins...she even faxed in a prescription for the time between when I called to schedule the first visit and the the appointment. I would aske her to write a script regardless. No good doctor should refuse that...even if it os just for preventive health general practioners recommend daily vitamins.

  • If she doesn't want to write you a script just take the target or CVS brand ones - personally I would feel weird not taking them - folic acid is important IMO. But to each his own.

  • Huh....I was going to start taking mine again since they made me feel so sick in 1st tri???  Now I'm confused!  I thought the iron and calcium were important?

  • I agree with pp, the folic acid is so important for neural tube development...I don't mind taking them either, I jsut have to remember!

I've been taking the CVS brand Prenatal/DHA Combo.  They are 5 bucks cheaper and the DHA is algae derived so no fishy burps!

  • My doctor told me to keep taking them through breastfeeding.  I'm still choking down those horse pills...
