2nd Trimester

breast feeding

Are any first time moms deciding not to try breast feeding? I'm debating and go back an forth, but with my work it's going to be REALLY hard. I work 13 hour shifts, and I know I could pump, but it seems like when I tell ppl (esp MIL) that I may not try I get these huge lectures intended to guilt me into changing my mind.?

Re: breast feeding

  • Im with you!  I will only be on Maternity Leave for 8 weeks, and it will be tough to continue breastfeeding/pumping once I go back.  I'm worried that changing from BF to bottle in such a short amount of time will be bad for the baby, so I'm leaning towards not BFing and going straight to bottle.  I'm definitely on the fence though!  I'm just waiting for a "Eureka" moment when I'll know what to do. :)  GL!

  • I am not breast feeding. I think it is a personal choice and nobody should make you feel gulity for not doing it. Its you're baby and you're boobs! :)

  • I am not BFing for a variety of reasons.  It was really hard to make the decision, but now that it is made, it is so much easier.  I work with all men. Pumping would leave me sitting in a bathroom stall for privacy...and the men wondering why I am taking so many breaks and such...just not a plesant environment.

I reccomend doing your research, making a decision and not looking back...but you have to be flexible.  Bfing doesn't work for every mom or every baby.

  • I'm pretty sure I won't be, but I can't say for sure until it's no longer hypothetical.  The only person I've discussed this with is DH.  His is the only opinion that matters to me about this.  I know there will probably be some fights on this when I get further along from others, but it's our choice/decision to make.
  • Do what ever YOU want!  Tell your MIL to stuff it!  Smile

  • I am 100% NOT breast feeding...
  • I am pumping so that the baby gets use to the bottle right away and it will make it easier for my hubby to feed her too.

  • I must say i am goin to give it a try... But thats your decision no one elses.... i just wanna be sure if there is anything i can do to help give the baby a healthier start i do... but who knows i might do it once an decide to stop.. just gonna try

  • I'm super into it but have a friend who didn't want to because she thought it was "gross." ?My only comment is that we spend 9 months doing our best to create this perfect little being--we stop drinking alcohol, caffeine, start taking crazy supplements, drinking loads of water, stop eating sushi, etc. ?Breastfeeding burns loads of calories (up to 600/day!) gives baby immunities and other good stuff that he can't get from formula, is great for bonding, and is free! ?Seems like if we can do the rest (and suffer the stretch marks, hemorrhoids, back aches, and random stranger comments) that it might be worth trying out. ?
  • I'm going to give it a shot.

don't let anyone guilt you into doing something you don't want to or are not comfortable doing.  the best thing for baby is a comfortable happy mommy, not one who is stressing about fitting pumping into her day.

I'm not even going to discuss my decision with anyone but my husband.

  • I did BF #1 with a difficult work schedule and just wanted to say, it is possible... if you decide to go that road.  I worked with all men for 11 hours and for a few weeks tried to "sneak" away to pump.  Eventually I just would say, "time to pump" and take a 15 minute break.  It was a great time to just re-group and take a break.  Your decision is totally yours, but whatever you decide to do- enjoy it! :)
