I use it every single day. I'm a Recruiter, and so I use it to find out names of people at certain companies. The bigger your network is, the more you can see, but it's free and definitely worth joining for business connections.
I am and have made lots of good business connections - mostly through people I know/work with/used to work with. I've had a couple of recruiters ask for my resume through LinkedIn.
I'm on it and haven't found it too difficult. I don't do much with it though. I have a lot of contacts from people I used to work with, and I updated my profile to read a lot like my resume.

I'm trying to find some people I used to work with, but I can't see any names. Am I doing something wrong? And, if not, how the heck am I suppose to find people I know without seeing their names??
If you're just starting, you should have a few people invite you to connect. Once you are connect to them, you are then connected to all of their contacts, etc. The more you connect to, the more names you'll be able to see.
And definitely if you ever look for a job, Linkedin is the 1st place Recruiters look.

Yes it's very tricky. I don't use it.
