A Random thought and seeking opinions on the name Ophelia

Hello ladies!

I have lurked on her for a while since DH and I plan to start TTC in October. You all have some great suggestions and I love to see what names people decide on.

I had a thought the other day after someone said something along the lines of "your child won't go very far with that name" and "can you imagine an adult named XXX"  While sometimes I agree and don't care for the name, I wanted to throw it out there that our President is Barack Obama.  Maybe a strange name can take you to some really cool places.  Big Smile

Anyway, I came across the name Ophelia the other day and I kind of like it.  I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts.  The only negative I can think of is boys saying "O - Feel-Ya" and I think that's just to mean to do to a child.

Re: A Random thought and seeking opinions on the name Ophelia

  • I love the name Ophelia ever since I saw the movie Pan's Labyrinth. The little girl's name in the movie is Ophelia and I think it sounds really sweet. Dh didn't agree though so it didn't make our short list.

  • NMS... I remember an Oprah book called "Surviving Ophelia" about eating disorders.  Awesome book but not so much an awesome name IMO.

  • I think it's pretty, but I worry about the nickname "Ophi."
  • It's pretty, but to me, it just screams "my parents were very into Shakespeare."

Oh come on. There are way worse names out there...

Ophelia is a bit too Hamlet's-suicidal-lover for me, but I agree that there are some nice similar alternatives... Opal? Olivia? Cordelia?

  • I am so not a Shakespeare person.  I never even realized the literary connection.  Thanks ladies.
  • Remember the fate of Ophelia in Hamlet? Not exactly the kind of association I'd like to carry around with my name...and FWIW, she is definitely the most famous Ophelia ever, so it's not likely people will ever associate the name with anything else...

  • It reminds me a Shakespeare's Hamlet. The Queen's name is Ophelia.

It is ok. I would not name my daughter that simply because it is from the 16th or 17th century. I like old names, but I think this one is just a little too old for me.

If you like it go for it though.

  • I love the name Ophelia.  I majored in English Lit in University and I've always loved Hamlet.  My husband just wouldn't budge on that name though.  It's a gorgeous name, and it's unique without being totally whacko.  Kids can make a nickname out of anything, so I try not to even think about that when considering names.
  • IMO, if a name is not made up, too babyish or have an effed up spelling, I'm all for it.

Ophelia is NMS, but I think it's a pretty name.

  • I love the name Ophelia, but DH vetoed it b/c of the association with Hamlet.

  • And I need to remind everyone, since no one mentioned it, Ophelia went crazy and drowned herself in Hamlet.

  • I like the name, but would probably only use it in the middle bc of the teasing potential.

I believe Barack went by "Barry" growing up....which may tell you something.

Ditto all of this. I'll add super unique/weird names get my veto too.

  • It's not something I'd use personally, but I think it's pretty and I like that it's not common.

  • It's pretty, but Hamlet's character Ophelia knocks it off my list. I couldn't name my kid after a character that went crazy and drown herself.
  • Yeah, I know about the whole Shakespeare thing.  But I still think the name is pretty.  Depends on whether you like unique and whether you don't mind the connection.
  • I love the name Ophelia, and the only negative thing I can think of is what you already mentioned.

P.s to PP: Pan's Labrynth is the creepiest movie I have ever seen.

  • It's a tragic figure's name ... but I think it's still very pretty

It reminds me a Shakespeare's Hamlet. The Queen's name is Ophelia.

    <English major delurking>
The queen's name was Gertrude. Ophelia was Hamlet's love interest. The title Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls is a nod to the Ophelia of Hamlet.

I love the name. DH has already vetoed, though I am not even PG. Wink

  • I think it is a pretty and fresh alternative to the ridiculously popular Olivia. Actually, when I was pregnant with my first daughter, I wouldn't tell anyone the name, only that it was from Shakespeare. Pretty much everyone thought I was naming her Ophelia. I went with Portia instead. It fits her, but now I do regret not realizing that most people associate Portia with the car Porsche and not with the amazing Shakespeare character. Oh well... lesson learned.

    And that's a bad thing?

  • I *** love Ophelia, but my huz won't let me name our baby Ophelia because of The Band song by the same name.  It's a sweet song, so I'm not sure why he's being so difficult.  Anyway, I have a new girl name, so I don't care anymore.  Approved!
  • I like it.  The only negative I can think of was the character in "Hamlet" was crazy.
  • I like it.  I think literary names are timeless, even if they're not commonly used.
  • It is a beautiful name.

The only negative I can think of is that she might drown herself.
