Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Have you read "Happiest Toddler on the Block"?

Is it worth reading?  I didn't read the baby version but heard great things on it and now that we are well....approaching the toddler stage, I thought I would ask for opinions.

Thanks!

Re: Have you read "Happiest Toddler on the Block"?

  • I do think it's worth a read.

I thought it was good for understanding how the toddler mind works.

I used some of the tools but not all.  I just couldn't get into the whole "cave man speak" that they recommend.

Another book I highly recommend is Love and Logic for Toddlers (6 months thru 5 years).

Some of my best tools have come from that book.  I like it's approach of teaching kids about consequences to actions.

That's the one that took the "battle" out of the toddler battles for us.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • I haven't read it yet but my friend highly recommends it, I think it's probably worth it.
  • Anybody know if it address complications with potty training?  Like, pooping in the garbage, shower, etc. instead of the toilet (when he knows it goes there and does it, just not all the time).  I have the "Toddler 411" book and while I really like it, it does not address off the wall potty training situations, lol.  I'm always up for learning about what my kid is thinking...I often say I'd like to spend a few hours in his head just to see what's going on in there!

  • I just got it today but havent watched it yet :)

I got the baby version and it was AWESOME!!! Hes like the baby whisperer! Id rec. to anyone!!  I would HIGHLY suggest getting the dvd over the books though....its easier to visualize and actually see the methods working so you dont second guess yourself, plus it take 20 min to watch as opposed to a week to read.

  • I am about half-way through the book right now. While I do think it is good, I do not feel it is as good as the "Happiest Baby on the Block". I also struggled with the "toddler-ease" thing, but it does have some fun and interesting tips.

Oh... I haven't seen anything about potty training, but I'm not finished yet. ; )

  • My mom just ordered the dvd on netflix and it was interesting, but I don't recall him addressing potty training.
  • I just read it 2 wks ago.  You know for me it was a waste of my time. The whole caveman speak thing was horrendous.  The more caveman I would get with Harmon when say he was having a tantrum... well he would break into sad tears and freak out more.  I have a tenderhearted little boy on my hands though (just like his dad).  I say read it but don't expect everything to flow like gospel!

  • I saw Dr. Karp give a lecture on it and I thought he was very good explaining stuff.   I have the video (I just sent it to another nestie and I'll send it to anyone else who wants to see it when I get it back).

It's helpful to watch what he says as opposed to reading about it- it just made more sense watching his ideas in action.

It doesn't talk about potty training.  It's more for how to deal with tantrums.  The cave man thing does work- but every baby is different and the tone needed for them is different.  I make faces while doing it and it really gets ds to stop crying--he starts giggling and thinks I'm being silly.  Whatever works, right?

3 IUI's and 2 IVF's later- Brady arrived. Born at 36 weeks after PUPPS and pre-e/HELLP.
IUI- BFN IVF #1 -BFP! Allie is our 2nd IVF baby. Born at 36 1/2 weeks after pre-e again
