Congested babies

My babies have both been so congested at night for the last few nights.  Sometimes I can get some stuff out of their noses but last night they were SO congested but nothing was coming out.  It seems to be interfering with feeding and sleep.  I'm not sure if I should call the pedi or not.  Any ideas?

Re: Congested babies

  • use a cool mist humidifier when they are napping and at night when they are sleeping.
  • Have you tried saline drops?  I think a brand is little noses - it works for my boys - even if there's nothing really to see, it clears out the gunk.

  • also, use saline drops, but use the nose sucker sparingly, it can make it worse. it sucks, i know! (ooh, no pun intended.)

  • My pedi said to put 2 saline drops in each nostril and use the nose sucker to gently suck the drops out.  We tried this and boogies came out with the drops and seemed to clear up their noses.
  • So, is it really common for babies to be congested like this?  We've been using the saline drops but I think I'll try the humidifier today.  We live in a really dry climate, so that is probably not helping.
  • Also elevate the crib.  When my DD was little we put a couple of telephone books under 2 of the legs and it helped alot.  Humidifiers are another good idea.  Also, run your shower really hot w/ the bathroom door closed and then take the babies in there to breathe in the steam.  The steam from the shower will help loosen the gunk up.
  • we dealt with this with our daughter for the first four months of her life.  it drove me insane, and every time we went for a check-up the doctor told me the same thing -- she has tiny nasal passages, and she'll grow out of it.  sure enough, she was right.  however, that didn't make listening to her struggle to breath any easier.  i used a lot of saline drops (little noses) and the suction bulb, but it didn't really do all that much.  sometimes i would hold her in the bathroom while i let the hot water run in the shower ...that would clear her up for a little while.

hope this clears up for your little ones soon!
