How long were you in early labor?

I am sneaking over here from third tri...I hope thats okay.

I went in today because I was having consistent contractions..much different and more painful than my usual BH's. I had an appt with my doc this morning and was 3 cm. When I went into L&D I was 4 cm, 80-90% effaced. They had me walk for a couple of hours which made the contractions a lot worse. Went back to my room to be checked, the nurse said I was 4.5 cm. They obviously ended up sending me home after all of that because my contractions were not close enough together...every 7-8 min. They said I am in early labor.

Soo after that long drawn out story ;o)...how long were you in "early labor" for? I am just really stressed out and frustrated, I went into PTL almost 3 wks ago and since then have been back and forth to the hospital 3 times.

Re: How long were you in early labor?

  • Also, I don't know if it makes a difference or not, but I am going to be attempting a vbac...does it seem like they should have kept me to monitor it a little closer? Or does that not make a difference? I didn't think to ask while I was there.

  • I went into labor on a Saturday, and I had dd on a Monday (40+ hrs!). It seemed like it was FOREVER!

  • I went in Saturday night at 6:30 - DD was born Sunday afternoon 4:50 PM.

Enough said -  all in all it was pretty good--up until the end (sort of)Yes

  • I was the same as you - contractions coming at about 7-8 minutes apart, sometimes they would get closer, then space out again...I went to the hospital and I was only 3 cm (they wouldn't admit me until I was 5!) ?It took three very long sleepless days and nights before I was admitted! ?Even then, I was given pitocin to hurry things up, finally 12 hours later DS was born!

  • I can't have pitocin since I am attempting a vbac...but I thought they would be able to break my water at least. This is what they did when I was in labor with my dd's. Which was basically the same story as now, except I was about a week less farther along then than I am now. Sorry if I am not making much sense...it has been a long day.
  • I was in early labor for almost 2 days.
  • I'm so sorry - my labor truly sucked and I was hoping to go natural and everything didn't go as planned! ?It never does I guess...are you doing any pelvic rocks or bouncing on a ball? ?That helped me for a little bit - I also took lots of warm baths and went on some slow walks...by the third day I was so exhausted though, hopefully they can break your bag and gets things moving!

Don't know if you can have any meds, but they gave me something before I was admitted (when I went at 3 cm) it was some kind of pill that makes you really sleepy, can't for the life of me remember, so that your body can get adequate rest...it's either supposed to stop contractions if baby isn't ready to come out, or help give your body enough rest to bring labor on stronger. ?Sorry I'm not much help but good luck and hopefully you will see baby soon!!

  • I was induced, so I was in the hospital the whole time.  36 hrs early labor, then 18 active, which includes 4 hrs pushing.  3 doses of cervidil and 2 bags of pitocin to get her out.
  • Skipper--they offered me a sleeping pill (I can't remember the name right now..my brain is mush!) but I refused. They had me take it when I was in the hospital for PTL and it didn't make me sleep at all...just really loopy and out of it. I hated feeling that way so I declined this time. I just can't imagine sitting here with these contractions for much longer, its so uncomfortable and annoying more than anything. I have two three year olds to take care of...its like either get the show on the road or...well get the show on the road! lol.

I took a bath this evening when we got home but it made me have 3 contractions in a row so it didn't make my comfort level any better unfortunately. It seems like any little movement triggers it.

  • Sounds like they gave us the same sleeping pill! ?It did make me loopy, but I did get a few hours rest. ?Can someone watch your 3 yr olds so you can focus on labor?? ?I did Bradley method (well attempted it) and just tried with all my might to relax through the contractions, stay still and relaxed as possible, DH gave me tons of back massages and stroked my hair and arms...would watching TV distract you from the contractions?? We tried doing that but it was hard to focus on anything during the contraction...

Again, sorry - don't know what else to say...the only thing that helped me was the pitocin and epidural (lifesaver!) to finally get the baby out!?

  • I was in early labor for 2 hours, that I was awake anyways. I woke up with my water breaking. 3 1/2 hours later DD was born. Granted it was via emergency c-section, but I was already in transition when I was put under for the c-section.

  • I started having contractions at 11am and had dd that same night at 7:52pm.

  • Thanks ladies, and thanks Skipper for your suggestions. Dh is off work until Thursday...so hopefully I deliver before then! I want my little guy to be healthy, and I am sure he will be so that is why I feel confident about delivering him now. I just hope things start to either pick up a bit...or lay off so that I can be somewhat comfortable. I am going to try and get some rest and see what happens from here. Thanks again ladies!

  • It was twelve hours from the time I felt my first real contraction til the time we left for the hospital when they were five minutes apart. I got to the hospital around 11 p.m., where they broke my water. After that, the contractions were horrible. I got an epi around 2 a.m. when I was a 4 and by 5 a.m. I was a 9. So rest up! It went by really fast for me after I got to the hospital. Try to eat a big meal before going in too. GL!
