Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

NE1s DC ever had a frenotomy (clipping of tongue)?

I took my DS to his 1 yr appt last Friday and told the Pedi about an observation that one of the daycare providers made.
She stated that because the frenulum (thing that holds tongue to bottom of mouth) is closer to the tip of his tongue he has problems chewing table foods. They also call this Tongue Tie.
The pedi had also made this observation when he was a newborn but the condition never prevented him from BFing.

The Pedi now recommended that we see an Ear Nose and Throat doc and get the frenulum clipped. He says its a really simple painless procedure. Its an outpatient procedure that takes less than 30 secs and recovery takes a couple of hours.

Is this true? Do you have any experiences with this?

  • My DD had hers clipped when she was 3 days old. It only took a second (DH had to hold her as I couldn't come into the room) she screamed but she seemed fine right afterwards.

Was she able to BF/Bottle feed just fine afterwards?

  • Yep, right away and breastfeeding was so much easier after she had it done. After the initial clip it really didn't seem to bother her at all. I think that DH and I were more traumatized by the whole situation than she was.
  • My first DS had a tongue tie (severe) and he also breastfed fine.  He had it clipped at 18 months.  It was actually quite traumatic for me as he had to go under a light general anesthetic to have the procedure done and had a couple of stitches in his mouth.  The OR procedure only took 15-20 minutes (from the time they took him from pre-op and then called me into post op) but we were in hospital for several hours overall.

The ENT doc told me that having the procedure done at a very young age is a simple in office procedure, but that typically a toddler is not going to tolerate having his tongue held and then the frenulum clipped in office.  I wish I had insisted when he was little.

We had it done because we were concerned about his ability to make certain sounds.  The speech therapist that evaluated him concurred and we have noticed a big change already in the words and sounds he is able to make (he's 19 months now).

    Good luck.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • DS was about 2-3 months when we discovered DS (it was the lactation consultant who did).  He wasnt latching.  Pedi said he could do it in his office, but I requested to see the ENT Dr.  So DS had it done. DH went in the room with him because I couldnt do it. I heard him scream and then he fell asleep.

I believe dentist can do it too and they also have lasers that can do it. DS had the scissor one (I believe).  The tongue heals really quickly and it is better to get it done sooner rather than later.  Tongue tied is also heridetary. I had no idea and soon found out DH was tongue-tied when he was little.

BTW-  The top portion is also heridetary. The skin between the top two teeth, whcih makes people have a space. I have that and you can see from my siggy DS has the same thing.  They snip that too, BUT I just have the wire between the back of the teeth to keep them together. I was too chicken to get it snipped on me and my parents opted out of it when I was little. Thought I would share, just in case they want you to get that done too.

DS- 4 years old, Natural m/c @ 7 weeks-12/1/09. Infertility issues- low ovarian reserve- low AMH and high FSH. Looking into adoption. Trying to figure out where to go with your little one? My favorite website is: Trekaroo AlternaTickers - Cool, free Web tickers
  • Thanks Ladies. I guess Im just nervous. We have our visit with the ENT on the 13th of Feb.
I am worried about them not being able to hold him down to do the clipping. Well, let's see what happens.

Thanks again for your replies. :)
