Car Seat Laws

What is the age or size that a child moves into a booster seat? The front seat?

What age do you turn the seat to front facing? Trying to figure out when to switch everyone. We're going to be playing musical car seats soon!

Re: Car Seat Laws

  • You need to check your state's laws on this.  I am not sure about the booster.  I believe the front facing is 1 year AND 20 lbs in most states.
  • I don't know abut Texas but usually the minimums for a booster are 4 y/o and 40 pounds. ?The minimum for turning the seat is 1 y/o and 20 pounds. ?It is always best to delay moving up to a booster and turning the seats if possible. ?

  • Thanks ladies! Addie may be 2 before she reaches 20 pounds!

I don't get why the age matters. If they're 40 pounds, they're 40 pounds regardless of how old they are. The car seat can't tell the child is only 3. This is something that bugs me to no end.

  • The 4 y/o thing is because a child younger than that can't be trusted not to wiggle around the strap. ?You could buy one of those convertible boosters that can be a harness until the child is old enough not to bother the seat belt strap. ?

  • Im not sure what your laws are but someone on car-seat.org can tell you what yours are.
