skoorb...my reflux expert

You are the only one I can think of in my desperation....

Colin is taking Zantac for reflux since 12/30. He was 11.5 lbs and was given 1 mil 3x daily. Wednesday we saw a new pediatrician and the Zantac was still working great so we didn't adjust his dose. He is now 12lbs. Yesterday afternoon all of his reflux symptoms returned. Should I call the pedi? What is your experience?

Typing one handed and he is screaming so I am sorry this is so vague

  • We didn't change the dosage until E gained a few pounds. And I hate to say this, but my pedi would want more than a day of symptoms to up the dosage.

Some suggestions... crying increases pain, as it causes gas. What works to calm him down? Is he happy when he is eating? feed him. is he happy when you are bouncing him? bounce him. I know that sounds insane, of course you are going to do all you can to calm him, but sometimes the basics still work. When we have a rough night, we use colic calm gripe water.

Fill the tub with warm water and get in, and have your husband hand him to you, let him lie on you in the warm water, chest to chest. This is soothing to him and also can help some of the pressure in his belly and keep the acid down. If you nurse, nurse him, or even bottle feed in the tub.

One thing that always worked for Ethan was to go outside. Hot or cold, we walk out on the porch and almost instantly he was calm. Once he was calm, we tried some belly massage, some skin to skin contact and even just talking to him. Hard when he is screaming.

Another thing Ihate to say, but it is true... Zantac sometimes just stops working, We added prevacid at one point and then stopped the zantac and did just prevacid. I also think sometimes, regardless of what meds, sometimes acid gets through and babies hurt. It sucks, but you can't completely cure it.

If he is still in pain tomorrow, call the pedi. Consider belly sleeping tonight if he is really uncomfortable.  If that scares you, keep in mind you are likely not going to sleep anyway.

I'm sorry, there isn't much I can tell you and I also think every baby is different. If MrsReem is on, she might be able to offer another perspective. Katen also had some rough nights...  Good luck! Keep me posted with what the pedi says!

  • Thank you so much. Last night I walked him for 3 hours and finally got him to sleep by doing laps on the stairs. My calves are killing me! He has been sleeping on his tummy since 4 wks old, although for 2 wks he was on me, then we moved him to the crib once he gained control of his head.

I just don't know what to do. I have done all my tricks. We have bounced, walked, done the stairs, bath, gone outside, taken a car ride, I even tried swaddling, which he hated since day one. I just want to cry for him, and it doesn't help that I my first pp AF showed today. I just feel so desperate. Thanks again.
