Re: How much Milk should my 14 month old be getting

  • We took the bottle away soon after DS turned a year. I stopped measuring the amount of milk he was getting at that point though. There are days when he drinks a lot, meaning around 18oz and there are days when he drinks only 10-12oz. Most of their nutrients should be coming from other foods though. Too much whole milk is actually not a good thing. I wanna say when DS was a year his pedi said to limit his milk intake to no more than 24oz a day. At 15 months they are now saying he should get around 16oz a day.

When we go out I do one of two things. If I know we'll be out eating lunch somewhere where they serve milk I'll bring an empty sippy cup and will order milk for him with his meal and pour it in his cup. It might not be whole milk but its ok to give them lowfat milk on occasion. If we know we aren't going to be close to a restaurant I'll put his milk in his sippy cup. I have the playtex insulators now so it stays somewhat colder longer than when we used his Nuby sippy cups.

  • The doc told me my DD needed 16-20oz.  I don't know if the amount depends on weight so I would ask your pedi.  Like pp, sometimes DD drinks more and sometimes less.  I don't really measure but I try to make sure she gets at least 2 sippy cups plus her breakfast/bedtime nursing.  Also, I bring the sippy and let DD sip it when out for about an hour or two as long as the milk seems fine then I dump it.

  • My co-worker who is a pediatric dietitian told me DS should be getting around 16 oz. now that he's a year old.  She said the same as pp, that getting too much milk fills them up so they are not getting the nutrients they need from solid foods. We also were completely off the bottle on DS's first birthday.  As for going to the mall, I would put it in a thermos or pack your sippy with an ice pack.

  • on most days dd gets 18 oz of milk - 3 6oz bottles but occasionally she'll get an additional 5 oz bottle if i need to get her down for a nap or something.
  • If I'm out and need milk, I will either carry a box of milk that doesn't need refrigeration (2% is all I can find), stop and buy some milk (McD, BKing, Sonic, ChicFilA all carry 2%, but you can buy whole milk at Starbucks!!), or carry a sippy of milk in a lunchbag with an icepack.

My DD is a milk-aholic, so I no longer encourage her to drink milk and try to get her to drink water when we're out. I limit her to 21oz a day.
