Saline drops - will they just make her more upset?

DD is very congested due to a sinus infection. Though I've been careful to use gentle tissues and wet washcloths to wipe her nose, it's still irritated and she screams when I try to wipe it. We've done the humidifier, she's on antibiotics, tried to use the battery-powered aspirator, etc. but I haven't tried the saline drops b/c I don't want to make her totally hysterical. Are they worth it?

Re: Saline drops - will they just make her more upset?

  • If she's congested they are 100% worth it.

All that hard compacted goo up there needs help to get loosened so it can come out.

Get the baby brand and follow the instructions.

Spray it up there (yes, she'll freak but it will be short lived) and then WAIT the 2 minutes they tell you to so it can loosen all the gook.

THEN your aspirator will be much more effective and hopefully you can finally get her good and cleared up!

  • My 2 cents differs slightly -

    1) the generic bottle is the same exact thing, and 1/5 the price

    2) make it fun! I sit Ava in her highchair, and get my stuff ready. I put on super smiley face, plug one side, and say "1, 2, 3!" and suck/wipe. repeat. I  make stupid faces and snorts like it's the best thing to ever happen to her. She loves it. I like the lil red cross white bulb from target, you can't shove it in too far.

Then once the old junk is out, I do the same thing with "a squirt" (again, never has anything so exciting happened in her life!) and do each nostril a couple times. I hold her head a bit, the spray makes her wiggle, cuz it tickles.

I suck her out a few minutes later and she's usually good for about 4 hours. This kid ALWAYS has boogs from daycare. It's gross.

yes, we LOVE the saline spray.

  • Thanks ladies! We'll give it a shot but I'm going to wait until DH comes in from mowing the lawn. I think this is gonna be a two-person job!
  • FWIW - I had to learn to do it on my own.

In case you ever need the "trick":

Place DD on the ground like diaper change but instead of feet in your crotch put her head in your crotch.

Use your thighs to secure her shoulders so she can't roll.

    Squirt quick.

Not as effective as doing it with them sitting up right but if you're desperate and have a BAD wiggler like I do it will work in a pinch.

  • totally worth it, but it is a wrettling match to get them into DS.  He does not enjoy them...sore nose or not
  • davez, you are too cute with making saline seem like the best thing ever!  I was cracking up reading your post.  I will have to remember this when it comes time for me to break out the saline.  Big Smile
  • My pedi tells us to make sure we put saline drops in the girls noses (during the winter especially) at each diaper change...when Olivia was congested she told us to use the nasal aspirator SPARINGLY...as in when we could see boogies, but to spray that nose stuff up there OFTEN to help relieve her congestion and issues with breathing due to congestion.
