Babies: 0 - 3 Months

If your baby has reflux....

....what medicine is he/she on and is it helping?  My DS is 4 weeks old and was put on reglan and pepcide a week ago.  I can tell a little bit of a change but not too much?!  He was never spitting up to where it came out of his mouth, he was just spitting/throwing up in his mouth and choking on it before swallowing it down.  That has gotten a bit better but it isn't resolved yet.  He still pulls back and arches his back terribly when nursing and he constantly grunts and seems horribly umcomfortable when he sleeps.  Again, it is a little better though.  Should I see more of a change by now??  I see doc next week for a follow up but was just curious how your little ones are doing??

Re: If your baby has reflux....

  • DD is on Zantac and it has helped tremendously with the pain.  We saw a change within a day or two of starting the Zantac.  However, reflux meds won't stop the spitting up, just the pain that goes along with it.  Pedi actually had us start thickening DD's evening bottles to help with the spit up overnight because she was waking up multiple times a night from it.

  • Ds was on Zantac from 2 weeks until 3 months when his reflux got significantly better. It took about 2-3 days to really see a difference. We found it would stop working suddenly when he gained weight. It is extremely weight-sensitive.
  • DS has been on Zantac for 3 months now and it helps sooo much!  He is a much happier baby with it.

  • DS is on Prevacid, which has helped with the pain but not the spitting.  Our ped is reluctant to try Reglan because of the known side effects.  I'm actually surprised that your dr. didn't try the antacid first before introducing the Reglan.
  • booksforbrooke~  My pedi gave me the Reglan but made it very clear that if DS had the side effects to discontinue it.  I think the main concern was the stress the reflux was putting on him when it came to sleeping and she wanted to try everything possible.  He honestly was only sleeping 2-3 hours a day (in a 24 hour period).  That included even little 15 minute naps!!  Thanks for your help!
  • we tried  a bunch of things. first, gavascon, did nothing. then mylanta before every meal, helped a little. then a change in formula and my diet - not so much. finally, he has been put on zantac and he is doing much much better. he still spits up but there is no more arching the back and not being able to put him down to sleep for an hour or so after a feed.
