DH and night duty

I am on night duty most nights of the week b/c DH works a stressful FT job. When DS cries, I hurry to him, shut the bedroom door and quietly go about taking care of whatever he needs.

BUT when DH decides he's going to help (sometimes on weekends) its a different story. DS cries, DH wakes me up and asks me what he wants. I say "I don't know! check diaper, hungry, hot, cold, needs cuddled..." All the time thinking WTF just go handle it so I can sleep for once. Then he is very noisy, turns on all the lights and proceeds to talk to DS while handling him. (which I can hear)

So his "help" isn't really and I am resigned to just handle nights b/c he does such a lousy job.

Anyone else going through this or something like it?

Re: DH and night duty

  • My DH really tries to help but whenever he gets up with DS in the night DS thinks it's playtime cause daddy is there.  So he ends up staying up for an hour or more when he never does that with me.  So the end result is the same...I almost always get up with DS.

  • haha. Sounds exactly like my DH! But I am glad when he "helps" b/c most times I atleast don't have to get out of bed.
  • OMG YES!! Thats hilarious. My DH is so sweet to help out so much in the middle of the night or morning if I ask him, but I will always hear him singing high pitched songs to her to make her smile, or laughing, or just talking to her, its so silly!! They are having fun, but I am always thinking "Great, now she will never sleep!"

The other night DH told me to go to bed at like 10 and he would put DD down. Then while she fussed loudly he proceeded to walk around the bedroom super shooshing her!! I asked him if he needed help and he told me no, and to rest, and I said "I can't exactly fall asleep hearing her fussing and you shooshing!!"

Men are dorks. They try, but.........

  • During the day I talk to, sing and play with DS a lot and I love it.

During the night I am a robot. I don't talk to or hardly look at him for fear of him getting excited to hang out with me. I'm all business. :-)

  • Similar situation.  Part of the problem is that DH sleeps like a log so he doesn't wake up until DS is howling.  I wake up at the first little whimper, so I'm wide awake by the time DH gets to him.  In DH's defense, he does usually sleep in the living room with DS when he takes night duty once a week (DS sleeps in the car seat right now because of reflux) so that I won't wake up..but I still hear them.
  • Dont get me started...I just went back to work on Wed and DH doesnt go into work until later so I told him he needs to start helping at night (b/c I agree it is just easier if I do it so I have been the one on night duty!)  So last night his idea of helping was getting up to make the bottle, after I had to wake him up b/c he didn't hear the screaming crying baby, and then he brings the bottle to me!!! What?? So now I have to get up and feed Cole...why bother you idiot! God they just don't get it. (sorry sore subjet this morning!!)
  • This is hilarious. I was just thinking about posting about this. I get DS most of the time because DH works. But, when DH is "on duty" he'll get up and then say he has to go to the bathroom first and asks if I can go in there to calm him until DH gets there. So, 10 minutes later, DH strolls in. He has to go to the bathroom, brush his teeth, mouthwash, get a drink, etc. before he does anything! Half the time, I've already changed DS's diaper and calmed him down. It just kills me!

  • This sounds like my life.  To be honest, I'm really glad someone else posted this because I've become very resentful.  He sleeps like a log, and I have to wake him up to feed the baby.  Then I hear every cry and squirm so I can't sleep.  I don't know what I'm going to do when I go back to work.  I'm praying she will eventually sleep through the nap because I've become a royal #itch.
  • KTH919: That is funny and so true! DH will pee, get a little drink. Once he even ate a pudding cup before getting to DS. Argh bonehead!!

But me....I go to DS right away despite an urgent need to pee or being thirsty.

    Men!
