Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Daycare issue help

I want to first off say I LOVE my daycare.  They have been so great.  Yesterday, however, I witnessed something that bothered me.  The one women in the room, was changing another infant.  I was there early so I think she was shocked to hear my voice.  When I walked in she stepped away, only for a second to grab the diaper, still within reach but not a hand ON the baby.  She was startled by my voice and turned around but then right back.

Now I should say, it was a younger infant 4-5 months and may not roll.  Also, I do not know if they have straps or not.  I never asked!  There is also a little rail, but it wouldn't stop my daughter.

What I did say this morning was saying to the one of the directors was that DD is very squirmy on the changing table, you have to keep an eye on her.  She said they do and they change them much faster than we do at home, the kids are so good here.  Should I have told her about the woman?  It really was a second, but it is not something I would do.  I always have a hand on her when I change her.

WWYD?

Re: Daycare issue help

  • Hmmm, getting the daycare help in trouble is always a tough question...I've been faced with stuff like this too. You hate to single someone out but then again you're talking about the safety of your child. So, in this paticular situation, I would go ahead and nicely tell the director that there was an individual who didn't change the diaper safely and that you don't want to get anyone in trouble but maybe ask them to send a reminder to the staff as a whole. My thoughts are they may all be getting a little relaxed and doing this. It would benefit everyone.

But if you don't have a problem voicing your concern then go ahead and say it directly. GL

  • For a child that age I wouldn't worry too much because they aren't likely to squirm away like our toddlers do. When my DS was on the baby side of the infant room all of the diapers and wipes were kept in cubbies that were under the changing area. There are no straps to hold the baby down. Most teachers will grab what they need before starting to change the baby but if they forget its not a huge deal since they are so small they aren't going anywhere. On the "big kid" side of the infant room the cubbies with the diapers and wipes are above the changing area so that they can keep a hand on the child while grabbing what they need quickly.

If I would have seen her do it with an older child I might say something but with a 4-5 month old I don't think its necessary.

  • No way I wouldn't say a thing. You don't know the baby or the situation the day-care worker was in. The baby could be very good at diaper changes and she stepped away for a second. It could have happened to anyone.

  • Hi!

My thoughts...if it bothered you enough to post...I'd say something.

Daycares provide a service like anyone else.  They just have your most important asset:)

We made a comment to ours because sometimes our daughter had some "poo residue" on her clothes / diaper when we got her home.  We didn't say whom directly was with her those days...but it didn't happen again going forward.

  • While talking to the director this morning you probably should have said what you noticed one of the workers do.  My daycare is awesome too, but if I saw something I didn't like I would definitely speak up.  It doesn't mean that worker would get fired, she might just be reminded on the proper things they need to do and rules they need to follow.  I've told my director about things I don't like before and she really appreiciated that.  She always tells me "If no one says anything to me, I don't know."  It obviously bothered you enough to post about it...Maybe bring it up to the director later today?  They should appreciate it since you trust them to watch your child.

Of course she might not know the baby.  The situation is the same for every diaper that they change though.  The baby might be good at diaper changes, but it would only take 1 time for the baby to move and fall off the changer.  All the workers should follow the rules and by bringing up what she saw, they could use that time to give everyone a friendly reminder.
