Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Anyone else have a failed induction?

I was on pitocin for 20 hours and only dialated from a 1 to a 2, so after DS stopped tolerating the contractions at 20 hours, I had to have a C-Section.  Just wondering if anyone else had a failed induction that ended in a C-Section.  I was induced at 40 weeks because of the size of the baby and the excess fluid.  My doctor was afraid if my water broke, the umbilical cord would come as well - I can't remember what medical term there is for when that happens.

Re: Anyone else have a failed induction?

  • Wowsers! Sorry you had that experience. My friend had a failed cervadil induction but pitocin worked for her.

Speaking of things I've never heard of...my umbillical cord snapped in 2 while my baby was being born. They literally mopped my walls. My OB said she only heard about that in medical school and never saw it happen. Glad I could entertain lol!

  • I tried for 40 hrs... went Csec.  Got to 10cm and all but narrow pelvis and apparently it took 40 hrs for doc's to figure it out!

  • I did.  Induced at 38w 3d due to high BP.  I had cervadil Saturday night, began having back to back intense contractions 3 hours after that was in.  Started piticon the next morning - contractions all day on Sunday with progress to 1cm.  Attempted to insert a foley bulb to dialite me - they tried to insert it  for 2 hours until I was having such intense contractions I could not take it anymore.  (It felt like getting membranes stripped for 2 hours).  They turned off the piticon at that point.  Had natural contractions all night Sunday night.  Epi at 3am Monday morning.  Water broke naturally around 9am Monday morning.  Piticon back on.  Progressed to 7 and stalled.  Baby was face up and OB and midwife were not sure he was going to fit out of me even if I got to 10cm.  They kept putting me on one side to try to flip him, that did not work and made my epi only work on one side.  7cm all day - epi stopped working completely around 6pm.  Got a fabulous injection into epi by some lady who I fell in love with.   They inserted a catheter around 8pm into uterus near baby's head to measure productivity of contractions and DS's heart rate got tacky.  They took it out 2 minutes later and he stabalized.  By 9pm midwife told me I could do piciton for 2 more hours or just have a c/s.  That was 48 hours after labor began.  So I opted for the c/s.  DS born 10:45pm Monday night.  Good thing I did because they found a cyst on one of my tubes that they were able to remove.  I was SO hungry/thirsty after the surgery and I will forever be grateful to the nurse who brought me juice and popcicles!

Carson Henry, born 39w, 2d, via emergency c/s due to no fetal movement and fetal distress.  Seizures, IVH grade 2, brain injury, kidney and liver damage.  Complete blood clot in the artery in his right arm.  27 days in the NICU.  Now discharged from all specialists, excepts his kidney doctor, who will monitor him indefinitely.  My tough little cookie.

  • I guess you could call it that. ?24 hours of cervidill (sp?) another 24 hours of cervadill b/c it didn't work the first time & then 12 hours of pit.

I had the choice of a c-section but asked if we could wait a little longer & he was finally born vaginally.?

  • Induced with pit (and they broke my water) at 41w.  36 hours later, I was finally able to make it to 9.5 cm.  Pushed for 1 1/2 hrs., but he wouldn't come past the cervix.  I wanted a natural birth so badly, but by that time, I was crying for a c-section.  In hindsight, I wish I would've gone a little longer.  Oh well...that's not what matters!  :)
  • Went to the hospital Wed. night to start pitocin at 37w, 5d (PIH, baginnings of pre-e).  Turns out the hospital was full...had I been in active labor they would have "found a place for me" according to my dr, but since I wasn't I got sent home.  Went back Thurs. at 6 am, started cytotec.  At noon, I was still only a fingertip and only having mild contrax.  Started 2nd round of cytotec, contrax got somewhat more intense, but still plenty manageable.  At 5 pm, still only a fingertip.  Dr decided to not do another dose so that I could eat dinner and walk around.  She had high hopes that I would make progress on my own over night (or even go into full-blown labor...ha!).  Next morning, still no progress.  She decided to give me one more dose of cytotec, but said a c-section was a possibility.  He was still high and my BP wasn't any better after being stuck in bed all day (I'd been on bedrest for 2 1/2 weeks, but was able to move about the house a little bit).  That dose of cytotec barely even caused any contrax, and I still had no progress at noon, so c-sect it was.  Since I was very good friends with the doctor on call, she didn't want to be the only one doing my c, so we had to wait on my regular doctor...who had to take her kids to their after-school activities, lol! So, DS was born just after 6 pm by c-section.  Big fat failed induction for me!

  • I don't think it was failed because I didn't have a c-section but I was in labor for 31 hours.
We started cervidil Thursday at 10pm (I was at 0) by 10 am Friday morning I was a fingertip. Went on Pitocin all Friday and by that evening I had only progressed to 1 cm. So back to the cervidil it was.
Finally this time things got moving and I went from 1 to 3cm in 2 hours! (By this time it was early Saturday morning) I finally got the epi! 2 hours later I was at 10cm. Delivery took 10 minutes!

  • 96 hour failed induction w/#1.
  • Me.  I was misdiagnosed with low fluid after an episode of decreased fetal movement (though she was punching the fetal monitor before I was sent down for the U/S) and they decided to induce me.  I was already 2-3 cm dilated and 70% or so effaced (baby at -2) at my last appointment before that.

7 hours after they hung the pit (since I was already partially dilated and effaced they didn't give me any cervadil) the staff OB came in and broke my water and I gushed.  She and my nurse both said my fluid was anything but low, so I'm still really pissed that I was misdiagnosed since my induction failed.  I got to around 6cm and 100% effaced and my progress ground to a halt for 2 hours.  DD never came down past -1, which I was really why my progress slowed down; she just wasn't ready and refused to descend.  At that point, she her heartrate was starting to drop with my contractions, and the doctor recommended a C-section.  I so didn't want one.  If she hadn't started showing distress I would have kept going.  I actually wish I had kept going a little longer, as her heartrate never dropped very low (never went below 105) but it's scary at the time.
