Bassinet setup - SIDs risk?

I just read on one of the posts here that the surface where baby sleeps has to be flat and hard otherwise its a SIDs risk. I never heard of that when I read about SIDs. i always thought the risk was having loose blankets in the bedding that baby could suffocate on. In my DS's bassinet, on top of the actual bassinet pad, I have one blanket laid out and tucked in the sides securely and then another fleece blanket laid atop that just to keep him warm when he lays on that.

Is this a SIDs risk?

I am no SIDS expert, but I believe they tell you to stay away from soft bedding because it potentially could create a 'pocket' of air around the baby. One thing they speculate causes SIDS is babies breathing too much of their own breath/carbon dioxide.

I agree with PP.  I will admit that I paranoid about everything being a SIDS risk. 

Yesterday my niece that died from SIDS would  of turned 2.  Needless to say I haven't gotten much sleep recently because I so paranoid.

Are the blankets pulled tight and tucked in securely around mattress - so basically they are just a little extra something under LO for warmth?  Is there plenty of air circulating around the room (fan?)  If so, I think you're fine.

yup so i have about 2 blankets and 1 sheet of padding under him essentially. i did it for warmth and to be cushy for him... ive been researching this and still havent found the reason why they say not to do this. whatever it is - even if there is no reason, i'm going to adjust it tonight. i hope he takes well to it b/c he's slept really well in his bassinet thus far

if you are worried about SIDS I strongly recommend the angel care monitor, it is the best thing by far I ever purchased....eases your mind a lot to know that something is monitoring your babies breathing while you are asleep.

We did the same thing... with both boys. I actually don't have bassinet sheets, so I took a flannel blanket and stretched it across and tucked it under the mattress. I felt okay with it. I would say you're fine. BUT, at the same time, for all we know, the edge could come untucked, and land on babies face.... so it's definitely not an expert/pediatrician's opinion. Just from one mama to another.
