language delay help

Hello!...new to the board. I have a son who is 18mo. and is not saying very many words. We are waiting to hear back from a specialist on when we can schedule an evaluation.

He is very social, and loves other kids. ?He's very affectionate and happy, and babbles all day long. ?He also has a great comprehension - he understands what we are saying, and follows directions well, but no words. On the down side, he has terrible separation anxiety, and is extremely shy w/adults who he is not familiar with. ?Anyone go through this, or know of someone who has??? ?Trying to stay positive, although it is tough!

?TIA!!!?

Re: language delay help

  • All those things sound normal and on target for an 18 month old.  They should have a vocab of 15 words..that includes Ma (mom), Ba (for bottle)...etc.

They normally have stranger anxiety around this time too.

Its good to get him evaluated if you are concerned.

  • Ditto G_Hoping.  DD didn't have very many words at 18 months and now at 21 months she has a ton, but she is still very shy around strangers.

  • my son was slow to talk and now the kid talks from the moment he wakes until he falls asleep.  he has a gazillion more words than he should at his age (though not pronounced correctly) and he comes up with the most amazing sentences.  I did call EI for an evaluation when he was just over a year.  Alhough his expressive language was delayed (according to their standards) it wasn't enough to qualify.  His comprehension was great, he signed to communicate (7-10 words probably) and had a few spoken words like "uh-oh" "mama" and "dada".    I am glad I did the eval, for my knowledge and peace of mind, but it turned out to be completely unneccessary.

    good luck.

  • DS was the exact same way at 18 months.  We did get him evaluated, although everyone else said he was fine.  He gets speech therapy right now and it doing awesome!  He amazes us everyday with his speech.  We think he'd be fine without continuing therapy, but we choose to so that he can continue to improve.  There is absolutely nothing else wrong with him.
I also teach special needs preschool (including severe speech), so I have a lot of experience with delays of all sorts.

    Good luck!  He'll be fine!

  • When DD was 18m she only said maybe 5 words (including mom and dad).  The ped suggested we get her evaluated through the state (free) and she qualified for services (not free for us but might be for you).  I would say the therapist was more helpful showing me how to encourage and guide DD and we evenutally suspended the sessions.  DD will be 3 in April and she's completely caught up.  Its amazing because she was so far off from where she should have been but at 2 1/2 she just had a major word explosion and she's progressed rapidly from there.

I'd suggest talking to your ped and getting a state evaluation to see what they say.

Oh, and I wanted to say, try not to worry even if your DC has a speech delay.  Some kids are just late bloomers.

  • At 18 months my dd babbled all day long and said one or 2 things.  Her doctor wasn't concerned.  Now at 22 months I have stopped counting at over 60 words and she is saying 3 and 4 word sentences.  I was very worried too, I hope everything works out for you!
