why did no one warn me that her 12 month shots are in the ARM! jiminy... would have put her in something a little easier - clothing wise. she screamed the entire way home, ate 2 chicken nuggets (her fav) a 1/2 piece of cheese and is passed out (on tylenol because of previous reactions to vaccinations)
but she's 18lb 8oz (gained 4oz in 2 weeks since being sick - ear infection/cold) so 5-12th percentile for weight. 75th percentile for height! and 50th (like always) for head size.
he didn't say anything about the no-teeth, just said based on her height and her hair, she'll get a full mouth soon. but that there wasn't anything he saw that was ready to break thru any min.
he also recomended miralax (sp?) for her constipation, or colace... neither i'm happy about giving her. was thinking fish oil? one of my local girls gives this to her son, says it works wonder... any one have any luck with easing constipation in toddlers? (other than using fruit... )
Re: home from DD's 12 month well visit
oh, and we denied the chicken-pox vax. he wondered why, and i explained my concerns about it, he said it was fine and she could get it at any time if we changed our minds.
we also have to go to the Quest Diagnostics and get her blood drawn for her lead testing (since we live in a house built in the 50s) ugg...
Ds still gets all his vaccinations in the leg. Sorry she took it so hard!
Fruit works to clear constipation short term because many fruits are a diaretic (that can't be spelled right) and because many fruit peels have fiber. The key to chronic constipation is just that - fiber. High fiber diet equals regularity. Lots of whole grains, leave the peels on fruits (though with no teeth that might be harder), oatmeal is a good fiber booster and brown rice instead of white/ etc. I've also had great luck with giving ds active culture yogurt regularly. He hasn't even been sick yet this whole cold/flu season. I was getting Stonyfields Organic plain but now I'm on the make my own bandwagon.
Oh and my bil didn't get teeth until he was like 13-14 months old and now he's 35 and has a full mouth of teeth.
Good luck!
sounds like she is doing well! poor little girl. i always feel so bad when they have to get shots - they have no idea it's even coming:( i hear you on the lead testing. our house was built in 1960 so we've got to get that too.
re: constipation. have you tried flax seed oil or ground flax seed? i add ground flax seed to dylan's purees sometimes. it's kind of the consistency of wheat germ, not sure how you'd get it into toddler food. might have to bake it into something. we've also had success with infant probiotics. our pedi was totally on board with both things. also, this is obvious but often overlooked - make sure she's getting enough fluids. also, you said youv'e tried fruit. i'm assuming you've tried pears, prunes, apricots, peas. we've had great luck with pear juice. good luck!
yea... we've tried the pears, prunes, apricots, peas (she loves pears and peas) but they aren't cutting it anymore, she gets at minimum 2 servings of one of those a day.
we are going to try flax and/or fish oil starting next week (if i can make it out to actually purchase the stuff). but i'll have to de-poop her first to get what she's been retaining out in order to get things working again.
the pedi also mentioned that her perineum is short, and her lower bowel (right before the "exit") is bent a little, neither is of concern but could be inflalming the situation and making it harder for her to pass her stool.
she gets a really balanced diet:
Breakfast: (just one/two of these) fruit pancakes, eggs, toast, fresh fruit, yogurt, or french toast
Lunch: some kind of protein (usually chicken), cheese and a fruit/veggie
Dinner: veggies (loves peas, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower), 1/2 piece of bread, fruit to finish
she gets water with lunch and dinner, and she's still taking 18oz of formula/whole milk mixed (4oz formula with 2oz milk mixed 3x a day)
the pedi wasn't concerned with her diet since we've had constipation issues since she was 3 months old (shortly after we got her reflux under control). He did think maybe her milk/formula intake was a tad bit high and wanted it down to around 16oz ideally but that it probably wasn't causing her constipation... but she drinks easily 10oz of water a day... tons of wet diapers...
like i said, we'll probably try the flax/fish oil to start then if that doesn't work then we'll go on to his recommendation of colace or miralax
