Preemies

My one year old hardly babbles, doesn't talk

Ds turned one on Monday. He was a 33 weeker. He very rarely babbles. It used to be more frequent but has stopped almost completely except when he's mad. He doesn't have any words like mama, dada, baba or anything. I mentioned his lack of babbling to our pedi at his 9 month appointment and she dismissed it as him being a boy and being a preemie. It hasn't gotten any better in the last few months. We have our one year appointment next week and I plan to bring it up again. When did your preemie start to babble? Get words?

Re: My one year old hardly babbles, doesn't talk

  • Max babbles non-stop... drives me a little bit crazy sometimes! LOL

No words, but lots of different noises... he's defintiely figuring out what he can do and what kind of reactions he'll get. It's funny when he discovers a new sound!

  • E isn't much of a babbler... she makes a lot of noise, but not really babbling. Though when we're with a large group of people she talks a ton. She did just start repeating "hi" to me when I say it to her first, but she doesn't do it on her own :)

  • No babbling yet from Carina, but she had a 3 week period back when she was 2 months old adjusted where she'd talk nonstop - it was amazing!  and now, nothing.  Our EI said that she would begin giving her speech therapy at her biweely visits.

Lucine makes more sounds, but again not babbling yet.

We have our 9 month appt in a couple weeks and I'll ask about it.

  • I have a bunch of friends that have 1-2 year olds, and most of the 1 year olds are not talking (and these are full term babies).  My son babbles, but he is not talking.  I think kids get infatuated with the noises that they can make in the beginning, and then they are over it, so they stop babbling as much.  It doesn't mean they are not learning and associating words with items though.  I hate to stereotype but I do think that boys hit milestones later than girls, or at least it has been the case with my friends.  You could always have him evaluated just to make sure if you are really worried...

Your son is adorable btw.  I love looking at your siggy pics!

  • Christopher is a 35 weeker and doesn't really babble.  We had him evaluated and he was on a 6-7 month level for language.  I'd have him evaluated if you are worried.
  • I would have him evaulated as well.

Katie is a non-stop talker. She can say mama, dada, Katie, kitty, hot, balloon, milk, and cheese.

We do flash cards with her everyday and make sure to say words throughout the entire day. It's always the blue cup, cold milk, etc. She is starting to point, so we are constantly saying, fan, picture frame, tv, kitchen, etc as well.

Also, is he doing any other big milestones right now- like trying to walk? A baby will sometimes ignore another skill while they are working on a new one. Also, boys are late talkers.

Katie is no where near walking, so we think that she is just working on speaking now. Have him evaulated and get speech therapy if it is needed.

  • My guys aren't babbling much either, and I think one of them has 2 words (that and this) but the other guy isn't close to talking.  They were babbling up a storm about a month ago, but they've been soooo close to walking for the last 3 weeks or so that trying to walk is ALL they want to do. I'm not worried yet, but it is something I'm planning on bringing up at their next dr appt.

  • Yes...he's very, very close to walking. He can let go and stand for a few seconds until he realizes what he's doing and then he'll sit. He cruises everywhere, pulls up on everything and crawls over everything. I think I'll try to get an evaluation. If nothing else, maybe they can give me a few tips on what I should be doing with him.

  • Jameson has been babbling since he was 6 months and started saying da da really well a week ago at 7 1/2 months.  He gets the talking naturally, he da da never stops talkingWink
  • My DD was a 26 weeker and I swore she'd never talk.  Its not unusual for them not to babble or talk later.  We've been told that the speech is the last thing for them to develop.  I think Savannah started babbling and talking aroun 16 months.  It wasn't until she turned 2 that she really started talking.  She's now 2 1/2 and talks non-stop.  I wouldn't worry too much at this point.

  • Thanks for your input ladies! It isn't something I'm super worried about, but something that I want to seek help for it it's warranted. That being said, I called and got an EI evaluation scheduled for Tuesday. She's also going to do a developmental evaluation which will be good (I think he's pretty much on track except speech) so we'll have all our bases covered. I know it'll come to him sooner or later, but if we qualify for professional help then I feel like we should take advantage of that opportunity.
