snaps or velcro

So it seems that everyone has very different opinions reagrding CDs with snaps vs. velcro.  I'm not yet CDing but plan to start at birth with the KL0s - as a person who has never CDd before I'm a bit clueless but am pretty convinced I would like snap dipes better than velcro.

Can ladies help clue me in on the pros/cons?  Thanks so much!

Re: snaps or velcro

  • I'm a mostly velcro girl.  I like the idea of snaps, that they'll last longer, look better, are harder for DS to pull off, and don't catch clothes.  But the truth is, most snaps diapers don't fit him well.  We need the adjustability of velcro.  We have some diapers with snaps, and I can't ever get them to fit right around his waist.  And he's difficult to change, very wiggly.  So velcro is much faster and easier for us.  When I use the snaps diaps, I always end up getting him crooked!

  • It is definitely personal preference and I think it can change with the age of the child as well.  Right now I prefer velcro, but here are what I see as pros and cons of each:

    Velcro:

Pros - maximum adjustability, no inbetween sizes, very user friendly for dads, daycare, etc..., quickest on a squirmy baby

Cons - wears out faster, can stick together in the wash if you forget to use laundry tabs, DC can get the diapers off easily when her or she gets older

    Snaps:

Pros - more durable, generally don't wear out, hard for DC to take off

Cons - sometimes the fit isn't quite right (too tight on one snap but too loose on the next), can be hard to fasten when DC is moving all over the place

  • I like both equally well, provided it's actually good quality velcro. BGs do NOT count as that imo. I have been buying more snaps lately and I really like them a lot. We're able to get a good fit with them, and I have a feeling they will hold up better in the long run. And DD can't get them off (yet) Smile

  • I like snaps better than velcro for the most part. I hate that the velcro can come undone and create a velcro chain of diapers in the wasth. I have this problem with DH's uniforms too and for that reason alone I won't buy many diapers that are velcro. Snaps are harder to get to fit perfectly and they're harder for people like my DH who can't remember where to snap the dipe so it fits DD right. Also, I've discovered that snaps can be a challenge when you have a baby who wants to crawl away while you're changing her. I like velcro for its convenience and quick-to-useness (new word??) but hate how it sticks to everything, especially MF inserts!
  • We also like the Idea of snaps, but they never work for us, no matter what ones I've tried. DS is just too skinny and they always leak out the top or the legs or something. I know that our velcro will wear out but that's pretty easy to replace.
