Shingles!!

My mom was over today helping me take Collin to get his pictures taken. She mentioned this pain in her back and then showed me this rash.. I didn't know about the rash or the pain in her back until she was here today. Anyway, she didn't touch Collin skin to skin or touch the rash and then touch anything or him. She went to the doctor's this afternoon who confirmed that it was freakin' shingles.  Should I be concerned?  I gave him a bath and washed all his clothes and I cloroxed everything I thought she may have touched.. do you think that's good?  Worse case he could get chickenpox right?  Should I call his pedi?

Re: Shingles!!

  • I'd call the pedi only because I have no idea about shingles.  I think you've done everything you possibly could.  Did she happen to ask her dr about visiting you and the baby?

  • I had shingles when I worked in L&D.  I could not go to work b/c the hospital did not want the liability, but my doc that it was a little extreme since the area was in a totallly covered spot on my body.  The biggest thing is there is no contact with the shingles.  Certainly more of a problem when on an area that is not covered by clothing.  You could call your pedi in the morning and just let them know, but I would not worry too much about it, especially since you say your mom never touched the shingles then touched anything.
  • Shingles can only be transmitted through contact with the rash, so hopefully you'll be ok.  But yes, I'd definitely call the pedi and let him/her know in case there's something they'd want to do.
  • DS was around a friend and she found out she had shingles... DS did not get anything. I would also just call the pedi to let them know. I'm sure you are scared - I was but all turned out ok for DS!! Good luck!

  • I googled it and basically it said that you'd have to touch the blister or something that did in order to contract anything and it sounds like he'd get the chickenpox but that people with shingles should not be around babies.  Her doctor who is also my pcp said that since it was in an area on her back covered with clothing that he would be fine.. but I gave him a bath and washed all his stuff that I think she was in contact with.  I'll probably call the pedi just to let them know.  My mom feels SO bad. She was supposed to watch him tomorrow while I go to my pp exam but my dads going to watch him instead and she said she feels like I think she has some awful disease. lol I obviously don't think that but don't want to chance it.

  • Yup - you'd need to contact the actual pustules (sp?) to get a chance at being infected with either chicken pox or your own shingles. I get an outbreak of shingles on my EAR of ALL places, when we do stressful stuff (like move cross country, etc) I also got it after antibiotics recently and after being stressed from the holidays, a trip out of town and a bunch of other stuff. No fun!
