So I'm ready to start building up a bit of a stash (mainly I want to get some super cute covers before people start closing shop due to the stupid law).
I want to go the PF route, maybe with a few fitteds thrown in here and there. I've been looking at the PF at GM. Here are my questions:
How many newborn PF should I get, if any?
Which newborn covers and how many?
How many infant PF should I get?
Is it good to have some fitteds in the mix?
Lastly, can you recommend your fave covers, fitteds, and wetbags. I'm happy to look at any site, hyena cart vendor, or etsy vendor.
Thanks ladies!
Re: Newborn CD advice needed
I would get at least a dozen newborn PFs, if not more. The infant prefolds fit my DD for a long time, much longer than they said they would, age-wise. I can't imagine folding one of those to fit such a tiny newborn.
Covers, I'd get 4-6 covers if you're going with PUL. Wool covers you could probably do with less, maybe 3-4
Infant prefolds I'd go with 2-3 dozen, depending on how often you're doing the CD wash and if you're air drying versus machine drying.
I liked having a couple of fitteds around to take to ILs. My MIL never did get the hang of PF diapers, even after we used them for several months.
If you're looking for cute covers, I'd recommend olivejanes on etsy - they fit great and are super cute (small disclaimer - I've only had mine a week & half or so, but I'm in love). I don't have a link at the moment (sorry) but I bet someone else will post it. We didn't use those at the NB stage, but I'm sure theyd' work well. We did use proraps (which were ok while his cord was healing) and I loved my thirsties covers around that time. I'd say around 5 covers. I'd rather have an extra or two around than not enough. I find I lost a lot of covers to poop when I was trying to figure out the best fold for DS.
I'd start with at least 24 pf's total (if you want to mainly stick with those) - I'll leave the sizing to someone else. We didn't use pf's right away, except for 'extra' diapers. I still use my NB pfs for inserts on occasion, however. I'd probably do 12 NB and then do the rest yellow edged, but (again) I'd be interested to see what others said on that subject. We did 24 KL0's (our main diaper for the NB stage) and 6 orange edged pfs. We mainly kept to our KL0's at that time, though (although I now love my pfs!). I'd definitely get some fitteds - I loved our KL's and now also have a BG bamboo fitted & Thirsties fab fitted which I both really like. They're great, espeically for quick changes.
Wetbags - lesliesboutique.com - I love her wetbags! You can also get them at abbyslane.com with free shipping.
Sorry it's so long and garbled - hope it helps!
i started with 4 covers (2 bummis and 2 prowraps) and 12 prefolds and about 8 KLOs. I just ordered another dozen prefolds and a thirsties and another kind of wrap because i felt i needed more (doing laundry every other day now)
good luck!
Here are some comments about my newborn cloth diapering experience. My daughter was about 7.5lbs when we started using cloth diapers (about 10 days old). We used prefolds and Kissaluvs for diapers and Proraps and Thirsties covers. We used disposables at night until my daughter was old enough to fit into our Bum Genius 3.0 diapers (which I love).
Prefolds: I was nervous about the umbilical cord and never really could figure out good folding techniques for a newborn, so I tri-folded the PFs and placed them in the covers. This worked fine with the Proraps. The Thirsties were a little too big to start. We never had a blowout, but I did get some poop staining along the leg gussets. I stopped using them when we moved into the Bum Genius diapers at about 5 weeks. I still use my PFs for burp rags and on top of my changing pad.
KL0s: These worked great. We never had any blowouts and they were very easy to put on. I liked them best with XS Thirsties covers (seemed a little too big for the Prorap covers). We continue to use the KL0s with Thirsties and my daughter is 9 weeks old.
We also used cloth wipes from www.greenmountaindiapers.com and lined a pop-top garbage pail with a Whammies elastic top wet bag (we have two). I didn't purchase enough diapers to sufficiently cover the newborn stage (we changed 12-15 diapers each day), so we always had a supply of disposables as a backup for when we got behind in laundry and to use at night.
I'm not so good with the PF advice, but I loved our KL0 fitteds and covet the Swaddlebees newborn OBV fitteds.
I love my Wahmies wetbags. I have two in rotation for the diaper bag. I also PPH my Large Bummis pail liner.
Also, HI! Glad to see you over here
I loved the nb pf from gmd. We had 8 but 24 would have been better. Some days dd has ben changed 30+ times since she super hates being wet at all.
I love our xs thirsty covers and our s ones too. We are now in the red edge ones and using the nb as burp rags. I second the extra covers. Dh and I were to tired to be worring w/ hand washing covers from the runny poo or the times she went as we changed her diaper.
a lot of people like proraps newborn covers for the beginning (newborn size), but aren't fond of them after that. I have 2 for the nb stage along with a few other newborn covers. I'm getting BSWW and Thirsties XS for the other nb covers. I think it's wise to have 4-6 covers on hand, depending on when you want to wash (this is what I've read; obviously I haven't tried anything yet).
For the "small" size, I'd say have just as many covers. You may want a couple different kinds just so you know what you like.
We also have a lot of fitteds in our stash. DH really likes the kissaluvs and knows he'll prefer anything with snaps or velcro over prefolds and snappi. We have some Thirsites Fab fitteds too.
Through a strange fluke we got 50 newborn pfs for free, and I've really liked having such an abundance. DD is a big wetter, so we often end up using 2 pfs at once, which means we go through them pretty quickly. At night we've been using KL0s (we have 6 of them), and we go through 2-3 each night. I like them for the nighttime b/c they are a bit easier to change in the dark when I'm half asleep, and they are more absorbant to handle the longer stretches w/o a change.
We are able to do laundry every other day, which is good b/c I had an unplanned c-section, which puts DH in charge of laundry for the first month or so, and I don't think he'd do it any more often.
We have 3 prowraps and 3 thirsties xs. Both work fine, but both DH and I prefer the thirsties. 6 covers is probably more than we need now, but we definitely used them all during the first week home when her poop was particularly runny and messy and we were still figuring out how to get the pfs to work best.
We also have 2 wammies bags for the dirty diapers. No complaints so far.
