posts vs points?

I am confused on how you get points.  It doesn't seem to be based on actual # of posts.  Is it time spent online too?  And does points affect your "status" (gold, silver, etc) or is that # of posts?

    You get points for making a post and for people responding.  It is basically how popular you are.  I think the posts change your status and the points give you nesticles but I could be wrong.
