NBR: WWYD?

To work, or not to work, that is the question...

I'm supposed to work tomorrow.  There will only be 4 of us (4 is the ideal # of people to have for the day's work, though 3 is do-able).

BUT...hubby is off for long weekend, and good high-school friend is in from NYC and since I last saw her, she got engaged, and I got pg (she doesn't know I'm pg yet)  She called to see if I want to go to breakfast with her and another hs friend.

So, would you lcall-out and leave coworkers short-staffed to visit with friends/hubby, or would you be a good doobie and go to work?

  • I am a slacker, which I justify with the motto "family first", so you know what I think you should do.

  • I would go in. I'd hate for my coworkers to leave me short staffed unless it was for a legitimate reason.

i agree.  it would be one thing if you had taken off to begin with but for it to just dawn on you that it would be more fun to be at home, i'd go in.  i'd be annoyed if a co-worker did this to me.

  • Sorry, I forgot to add that I would also be watching my sick/vacation days like a hawk after getting pg. Because you never know how many days you'll need for legit. things like being sick, not feeling well, or just for maternity leave. So I wouldn't take days that I didn't need to because you just don't know what's coming down the line.

  • I get to spend so little time with DH as it is, that if you can call out, I would personally do it.  Just remember to be understanding when your coworkers do the same thing!!
  • I would totally take the day under those circumstances as long as you weren't putting everyone in a really bad bind, which, you said 3 is still OK.

I don't really feel that bad when it comes to this, because I've been there 11 mos., called out once when I really was super sick, and they all do it at least every other week.

  • I would be a loser and go in.  I would be worried about the bad karma of using a "sick day".  But, my situation is a little different.  I work in a hospital (people get reaaallly pissed if you call in) and haven't taken a sick day in seven years.

Could you do lunch with your friend during your lunch break?  Or do breakfast and go in late?

  • Could you go in late? That way you could have breakfast and then go into work.  I would be so, so tempted to take off, but I would probably feel so guilty for leaving my co-workers in a possible bind, that I wouldn't totally enjoy myself.
  • I would go in... but after breakfast. Just say something has come up and you're going to be a few hours late, but you'll be there. End of discussion. Everyone wins Big Smile

  • I don't understand the guilty feelings...  If you have the personal time to take, that is what it's there for.  Personal days are just that - yours to do with what you want and if this is important to you, why shouldn't you be able to spend it on that. I think as long as you're not totally screwing your coworkers it's perfectly legit.
