Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What does a 14 month old need?

Hi, I am having a second child in August and my DD will be about 14 months old.  I am trying to figure out what we will need two of for the babies.  I already have a double stroller and a sit and stand.

I was wondering if I should get another pack and play, high chair..etc.  I don't really know what I should buy for this second baby and what my DD will be able to handle.

 Thanks for your help.

  • Mine are a little further apart than yours but the only thing I plan on buying add'l (wish I could get all new LOL)...is bassinet (got rid of mine), highchair (but you wont need for awhile so it could wait), double monitor (so it monitors both rooms at the same time), breast pump ( I sold mine)...I think thats it....oh and if its not same sex than you prob want some clothes and a few things extra....but as far as "gear" I think thats it.

Everything else (swing, bouncer, boppy, playmat, etc.) your older child wont be using anymore.

  • DD will be 14 months at the end of the month. I think the only things she's still using that she needed as a newborn are her crib, changing table, and occasionally the swing.

You could get away without buying a second crib if you keep DC#2 in a PNP until your DD is ready for a toddler bed, but I know that wouldn't work for us since DD has never slept well in her PNP. You might need another PNP if you travel, but you could also always use hotel cribs. You wouldn't need a second changing table, and unless your DD is a poor napper like mine, you probably won't need a second swing either.

You'll obviously need a convertible car seat for DD if you don't have one already.

You won't need another high chair until DC#2 starts solids, and your DD will be 18 to 20 months old then and may be using a booster instead. I'd wait until you get to that point before deciding what to buy.

    Congratulations on your pregnancy!

  • No need for another PNP.  I would get DD1 a booster chair that straps to the chairs.  That would be for her - and the high chair will be for baby.  I know my DD2 would be ready for that.  Just another crib.
