Anyone else NOT want their children's name to start with the same letter?

I was just thinking about this, I guess I'm having a little baby fever (although we stilla ren't sure if we'll have anymore)

Anyway, 2 of my favorite girl names start with an A (DD's name also starts with an A), but I DO NOT want my kids to have the same first letter, is that weird?

Re: Anyone else NOT want their children's name to start with the same letter?

  • VERY WEIRD!  No just kidding.  My FIL's family all have P names - I think that is kind of weird!  But there are also 5 kids!  Then I realized - what did we do = we caried on the tradition....LOL!  And FIL/MIL are divorced and Paige has the same initials as FIL - this is all FLUKE not planned at all!

  • I don't really. But if I hear a B name that I love, I would use it, but I prefer to stay away from all "B's"

  • First of all- to each their own. But it is not my stlye. I have a friend with three kids all As and when she had her 3rd (a boy) she was looking for an A name she and her husband could not agree. Now almost two years later neither like the name (Aiden) They call him AJ. I think it is sad that the settled on a name just because it started with the right letter. IMO the name doesnt fit his personality.

  • Jessica - That's funny! DH & his brother & sister's names all start with the letter J....I dunno, like one of my favorite names is Annabelle....Atalie and Annabelle....that's just a little too "cutesy" for me!!

We have thought about using a J name, only because DD & mine starts with A's, then baby #2 & DH names would both start with J!!! But I'm just not as crazy about the J names we've come up with as I am with the A names!

  • I think it's weird when the whole family has names that start with the same letter, a la the Duggars.

Still, if there was another name that starts with the letter E that I loved, I'd probably use it, but I wouldn't purposefully choose another E name. It's just not my style.

  • I do not purposely want to name my kids with the same first letter.  However, when we have another DC, if there is a name that we absolutely LOVE that starts with a B, I wouldn't totally rule it out.  Growing up, we had 2 different family friends that all named their kids with the same first letter (Brian, Brad, Brandon and the other family was Brian, Brandon, Brent).  I'm not sure why that would appeal to someone, but whatever?!

I know! It just seems weird to me! DH is Jason, sister is Jennifer & brother is Josh....and DH's dad ALWAYS gets their names confused when talking/calling one of them!

  • My mom did not plan it this way but everyone in my immediate family are A, B, or Cs, including DH and SIL. When I was picking a name my mom tried to suggest it should be an A B or C.

  • This is a big thing in DH's family. Lots of same letter families.

I am all for the cute theme but there is only one L name I like for Girls and nothing we can agree on for boys.

Although we could do the alphabet theme bc right now our initials are J (dh) K(me) and L so we could go with and M name but the same issues we can't find an M name we like.

I think we are just going to have to go the old fashion way and pick names we like regardless of theme. :-)

  • not so much weird as it can be annoying.  but like pp said to each their own.  dh's sisters names are kathy, kristy, karen.  my bros names are josh, jason, and my dad's name is john.  so when you call someones name in the house or you are frustrated and calling that person you can mix up the names and call them the wrong name.  happened to me all the time.  my name is Amie and my mom would call out Jamie.........annoying!

Well if you are looking for a J name you always have Jessica Wink  I actually like Annabelle - I agree you aren't just doing it to use the same letter names - you are doing it because you like that name!  My friends have girls named Abby and Anna.  Cute but I don't think they did it on purpose.

  • It's not weird, it's just a personal preference.  My children actually have the same initials.
  • eh... I little weird. I guess I just worry about bigger things than my kids names though. (not saying you're not of course, just saying that it wouldn't bother me- obvi my kidsnames are 2 letters apart Stick out tongue)

  • No.  If it was a name I really loved and otherwise flowed well, I would still probably consider it though.

This happened in our house too. The girls' names -- Kristin, Erin, and Lauren -- all have the same ending sound (though I don't think my parents planned it that way), and my mom was always shouting out the wrong name. Also, when she was little, my youngest sister called my brother Rich-en because she thought all our names were supposed to end like that. lol.

See 2 letters apart wouldn't be a big deal to me, nor would the same letter if I had twins, I cause maybe that's why though, I always think of twins when I hear names with the same letter!

Same thing with DH's family! His dad STILL does this, if all 3 kids are there, he says the other 2 names before the one he is meaning to say...every.single.time.

Honestly, I think that is what has turned me off to it!

  • I agree.  I'm not really a fan of that - it makes me think of the Duggars and all their "J" names.  That said, the only two girls names we can agree on are Catherine and Charlotte.  DD is Clara.  Oh, and we both want Victoria for a middle name if we have another girl.  DD's middle name is Valerie.  So they would have the same initials, too!

I have a friend whose co-worker took this to an extreme.  His name is Kyle, his wife is something with a K (Katherine or something) and their first son is named Kevin.  Their second son......is named Knathan.  Yep, that's "Nathan" with a silent "K".  I am not even joking.

  • I've decided I don't really care either way.  It turns out that the only boy name we were able to agree on is Alexander, so if we have a boy, we'll have two A names for sure.  DH and I had a really hard time agreeing on names in general.  I'm not going to rule anything out just because of the letter a name starts with.

    That is horrible! Poor kid!

  • LOL Its VERY common these days, Im kinda on the fence....We have NO NAME for our bundle on the way....DD is Madison and I thought of keeping it an M but dont LOVE any other M names.. No biggie to me to have an M name though....DH and siblings are (Jim, Jason and Jennifer, Parents are Jim & Jane)  All J's!!

My girlfriends siblings are all S's....Shay, Shayna, Shane, and Sharminee...

I know a TON of families like that....

  • not weird at all. i absolutely didn't want mine to start with the same letter, but it's pretty common among multiples to have them all start the same. i guess it's not as bad if it's different aged siblings, but still, if you don't like it, so be it!

  • not weird.

some people don't like the alliteration with names in a family... some do. We're doing all G names- but that's our thing- we know it's dorky and that some people hate it- but we don't care.  do what you want- just pick names you like.

  • I don't think it's wierd, but If i LOVED a name that was the same letter, I'd probably just choose it anyway and then just deal with the dorkiness of it.

Oh yeah, I think I would TRY to find 2 (or 3!) names I liked that started with the same letter if I had multiples!

  • We could have been an all A family, but chose not to. But, the only names I like for #2 are Mason and Madelyn. So, we would have A, A, M and M. It wasn't a conscious decision though.
