waking up hungry at 4am?

Our DS is almost a year.  He has never been a really later sleeper, but he still often wakes up at 4am-5am. (He goes to bed 7-8).  He seems hungry so we give him a bottle and he just attacks it and won't let us take it out of his mouth!  He seems to eat a lot in the day, creal for breakfast and the rest mostly table foods and 3 bottles.  I wonder if he just needs more to eat before bed.  We give him dinner at like 6:30 pm and I wonder if by that time he is tired and does not eat as much as he could.  Or if  more of the food ends up on the floor than his mouth.  At this rate I have NO idea how we would ever wean him from that bottle as he seems so desparate for it.  Help!

Re: waking up hungry at 4am?

  • My DD is 15 months old and has recently started waking up at around 4 AM, again, because she is teething. Have you noticed if he has any tender spots on his gums? You could also try giving him a snack before he goes to bed, if you feed him dinner early. HTH

  • My son did this alot too around 16- 18 months. He would wake up and say "eat, eat!"

We started giving him dinner at 6ish, then a snack at 7:30 before bed. Yogurt, cereal bar, milk with carnation instant breakfast in it... I think it was a growth spurt, he stopped after a few weeks.
