Straws: how to teach?

I want to try to get the boys to learn how to use straw sippies soon, but they just don't get it. Is there any trick? Right now, I'll get some liquid in the straw with my finger at the top, and then let them suck on it a little to get it out. Or I'll just dump it in their mouth. But they can't seem to figure out how to suck on the straw to get the liquid out.

Hmmm.

Re: Straws: how to teach?

  • DD wasn't good at first, Istarted the same way as you did with a little in the straw but sometimes it just poured out of her mouth.  I got thinner straws for home and cut them short.  She is really good at it.  Sometimes she take too much and gags but she is getting it.  They say BFers are better at it.  I am sure they will catch on.

  • i was doing that too...and one day about a month ago, i just gave DS a straw cup to see if he would know what to do and he did!  Sippy cups not so much, but the straw cups he loves!  HE sometimes tips them back like a bottle, and of course gets nothing, but then he figures it out and realizes he has to hold it upright in order to get anything.
  • I cut regular straws in half and would hold a cup for her to try with them.  Probably did this half a dozen times before she figured it out.  We bought her a straw sippy and now she is great with it.  I would say just keep offering it and they will get it!
  • I did exactly what you did and one day she just got it!  Just keep trying!  After you do the holding your finger over the straw a few times - off the straw in the cup (all at the same sitting).  I have also heard that fat straws are the best - like the ones from Steak N Shake!

  • I just showed DS how to do this. He's 13 months. I just put the straw in his mouth and made kissing or sucking faces and sounds. It took him awhile and he chewed on the straw a bit but then once he got some he was good to go. Still he prefers sippy cups over straw cups. Oh and make sure you use something they love like Juice.?
  • we just kept trying and trying. she evenetually got it and now likes that sippy the best.
  • I did the same thing by holding my finger over the straw.  But what really helped DS was getting him to drink out of a drinking box.  I just held the straw to his mouth and gently squeezed the box so the liquid would go in his mouth.  After a few times, it just sorta clicked and he was drinking from a straw by the end of the day.  HTH!
  • Tried with a straw sippy first, he didn't do so well. Tried a cup and straw got it right away. Then tried a different straw sippy and he got it. I think it just takes a little bit. We would take a drink out of the straw and let him watch us.
  • I just kept giving them to them and they figured it out.  The munchkin straw cups are really good, they don't have to suck as hard as other straw cups and I really don't have any pxs with leaking.
