OMG poor DD :( Help!

This poor girl and her BMs. . . she woke up crying and standing in her crib in a ram-rod straight posture trying to hold her poop in, so I brought her downstairs to the changing table so try and get her to pass. At this point when she's fighting so hard it usually involves holding her legs to her chest and almost forcing her to poop because she won't do it otherwise.?
Well, she starts to go and this thing is massive. I seriously thought she was going to tear something. I felt so horrible but she HAD to do it. I gave her some Motrin and we sat on the couch for a few minutes with a sippy of apple juice (which doesn't do much for her but for the time being I had to do SOMETHING for her!?no).?
I think I'm going to cut out her milk and put her back on Miralax for awhile (helped a LOT when she was younger and having this problem). She'll eat cheese and yogurt so I'll get her calcium that way. Any other ideas? She was up from 10P to at least 1A last night and I wonder if this was why. . .

  • My friend's son has problems too. he's 9 now but still has them, ever since he was an infant. She has him on Miralax which works good. Aside from that, things that will help them go: prunes, raisins, applejuice, etc. I'm sure you know them all! She'll also get calcium from veggies, if she'll eat them. Right now my ds doens't, lol.
  • Could you try prune juice?

  • Try to have her eat as much fiber as possible.  Toddler 411 suggest adding Benefiber to foods as well.

Remember cheese can bind her up too, so it may be better to look for calcium somewhere else.

    I hope she feels better.

  • This happens to my DD too. No real advice except make sure she gets plenty of fluids. I feel your pain. I've had to actually pull turds from her  butthole when they have gotten stuck. If you know a hard poop is coming you can put vaseline around her anus to help it glide out. So gross that I know this.

  • I'm so sorry.  I've been there.  We have to actually limit how much milk and cheese DD eats or we'll have the same problem.  Cheese is the worst and we won't give it to her to snack on anymore.  She'll only have it in mac n cheese or grilled cheese on occasion.  Yogurt doesn't seem to be an issue for her.  We give her as much juice as she wants because its the only thing that will keep her regular.  When things get bad, we always have small cans of prune juice on hand and that does the trick pretty quickly.  That's worked for us.
  • I'm not sure how often she gets Motrin but it can be constipating. ?

Julia had a lot of constipation issues at that age and so we fed her babyfood prunes every day. ?If I put sprinkles on top and called it "prune sauce" she'd gobble it right up. ??

  • Poor thing.  I would recommend maybe prune juice and to limit cheese since it can constipate her.  GL.
  • My son, who is two has been having this problem since he got off of breastmilk.  He will not drink milk so I know that is not the problem.  However, I give him babylax suppository and he goes within 1-5 minutes.  I have been giving them to him since he was 14 months old.  I don't give it to him but once in a while now.  One thing that is good to is giving yogurt especially if it has acidolpholus(sp?) or bifidus regulary.  I give my son Activa yogurt every other day or so.  Good luck.
  • Thanks for the advice. She doesn't get cheese very often (maybe 2-3x a week). I'll try the prune juice too. hopefully that will hep :(
  • My dr says pear juice.
