Preemies

Rice vs. Oatmeal.

My DD was born at 33 wks. She is currently a little over a month old. While in the NICU she had no problems with reflux. As soon as we brought her home though that changed. Our pedi told us to try and elevate her bassinett and to keep her upright after feedings. We did that & it didn't work.

Now we have moved onto rice in the bottles at our Drs suggestion. The problem we are having though is that the rice is obviously causing a whole other issue with her poop! After not going for a few days & trying everything from water to pear juice and water combined we have switched to oatmeal. So far there hasn't been that much spitting up, but I still hear it when she burps. Also, she is still having trouble getting to sleep after the bottle due to the reflux. My thoughts were that this thicker forumla was supposed to help, if not stop this. Does anyone else have this same problem? And one last question ( sorry this is so long; I'm new to this thing!  ) Are there nipples used / made exclusively for these thicker formulas. I've looked everywhere and have found nothing. I've resorted to making the hole in the nipples we have larger, but that has been causing some feeding issues.

Re: Rice vs. Oatmeal.

  • My DS had reflux so bad that we mixed the cereal in with the formula as well, only it was as thick as cake batter!  It was the only way it would stay down.  I cross-cut the nipples so it would be easier for him to eat it.  I've seen nipples in the store that are cross-cut but I had to cut them more.  So they are out there, just hard to find.  Also, DS specialist said that rice cereal causes constipation.  Oatmeal is better but the best to get is Barley cereal.  It's a natural laxative.  But it's harder to find than Oatmeal.  Hope things get better for you.  Good luck!
  • Thanks about the info with the Barley. So far we are doing well with the oatmeal. No constipation so far, knock on wood. I will have to try it if we start to have issues w/ the oatmeal.

Now if we could get the reflux under control we would be on the right path ;)

  • We use the Dr Browns Bottles for Ruby's reflux which helped a lot, even without thickening. But they do offer a y cut nipple that is for thicker formula, but we were fine with a level 2 nipple.
  • I've read about Dr. Browns. I think I'm going to have to make a run to the store this weekend & see what I can find. Maybe the level 2 will work for my DD as well. And your little one is adorable! Thanks again!!

  • Sorry no advice as DS did not have reflux but I had to say I love your siggy pic of your little girl!
  • Thank you so much. Your little guy is a going to be a heartbreaker..especially with that mohawk!

  • I don't have any advice either but wanted to say she is so cute and my son, who was a 33 weeker had the same exact stats as your DD!
  • They are a match made in preemie heaven! He is absolutly precious. How is he doing now?
  • Thank you! I was only putting in a teaspoon or two per 4-6 ounce bottles. I know some put in a teaspoon per ounce, so if that's the case I don't think a level 2 would work. I've heard some ladies that enlarge the whole with a fork for feeds that are thick and it worked really well! Good luck!

Thanks...We think so! He is doing great. He will be 3 months on Sunday, He is cooing and smiling and starting to follow with his eyes. He is probably about 10lbs-ish right now...at 2 mos he was 8lb14oz and I haven't had him weighed since.

I just noticed you little girl was born on my original due dateSmile Too funny!

  • Ha! I'm glad my daughter was born when someone was due! lol. Your DS sounds like her is doing fantastic. My DD was last at the pedi the week after Xmas and was 5lbs 10oz. We go back next week and I can't wait to see what she has gained. I love hearing all the little things other preemies are doing & at what ages. It gives me even more to look forward too!
