I noticed in an earlier post that many of you suggest going on Clomid only if the dr will monitor you. Could you tell me what the concerns are if you're not monitored? Thanks:)
Since Clomid stimulates the ovaries, they monitor you to make sure you don't get cysts.
When I start a new Clomid cycle, i have a cd3 us to make sure there are no cysts. if not- they give me my clomid rx and i take days 3-7. then on cd 12 i go in to see how the follicles are growing.
that's all i know regarding monitoring bc that's what i do. i'm not sure if other drs do bloodwork or anything. this last cycle i had to have my estrogen levels tested bc of a recent miscarriage but that was the only time.
Not really sure of majore concerns. I know some people experience bad hot flashes when taking it. I used it last year, had no problems at all and got my first bfp on 100mg. Good Luck!
Ditto to Lucky's post- it's partly b/c they want to make sure you don't have cycts- there is a risk of OHSS (ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome) where your ovaries will make too many follicles as well, and if they all burst, it can be pretty nasty. Also, Clomid is known to thin the uterine lining of some women, which makes it impossible to sustain a pregnancy. The most basic monitoring includes a CD12 u/s, and a progesterone test at either day 21/22 or 7dpo (dr's differ on this) to make sure that you did indeed ovulate.
Ditto pp -- OHSS and thinned lining are the main concerns with Clomid. You don't want to overstimulate b/c your ovaries can actually rupture and in rare cases you can die. And the thinned lining is a very serious concern as the embryo needs thick and fluffy lining (hopefully trilaminar) to snuggle into for healthy implantation.
My side effects were: - hot flashes (started 2-3 days into my dose and lasted for 7-10 days, longer the higher my dose was) - itchy breasts/thighs/neck - significant mood swings

oh and btw- they only gave me the clomid this last cycle bc my estrogen was under a certain level.
HTH!
oh yes uterine lining- forgot about that one! i don't have progesterone levels taken bc I take prometrium from 3dpiui.
as to other side effects i don't really have any besides more significant pain with ovulation than normal.
GL!
