knitters please help

so I am learning how to knit.  I just finished casting the yarn.  Should the working yarn be on the bottom of the needle or the top.  Right now the tail yarn is at the top

You want the yarn that is attached to the ball at the top of your work.  The tail should be at the bottom.  Is that what you mean?

I usually knit the tail along with the working yarn, for the first couple stitches- and if you don't have a super long tail, you can usually get away with knitting it all the way in. Less finishing.

Of course, if you're just playing, don't bother. But, it is a nice way to keep from weaving in tons of ends when you have a lot of yarn changes in other projects.

That's a good idea.  I hadn't thought of it before!
