constipation

with switching over from primarily breast milk to more formula ds's poops are different. ?they are thicker but not by any means hard poops. ?he does grunt and fuss more with pooping. ?is this normal with formula fed babies or should I give him something?? ?(thanks GRkaters for the heads up!)

Re: constipation

  • It's normal.  FF'd babies tend to have clay-like bm's.  If your ds was constipated, his bm's would be hard and round.  If you're concerned, it wouldn't hurt to call your ped, though.

  • No, clay-like BMs are not typical of FF babies--that's constipation. DS has normal smooshy peanut-buttery poops every day, BUT when he's constipated it's thicker and pastier. Pedi said try prune juice (I use juice/water to make 2 oz total) twice a day. Works like a charm! Just used it again today, in fact. He's a much happier dude now, after a crappy awful night's sleep yesterday. :)

I thought the same thing about hard/round poops, but after a terrible cranky fussy week I called the pedi, thinking DS might have an ear infection. When I described his demeanor, his recent poops, and she examined him (perfect ears, btw), she said he was constipated. They'd been thicker, not filling the diaper as much, but not HARD and certainly not round. After he'd had two doses of prune juice and a few good soft poops, his mood was drastically improved.
