Babies: 0 - 3 Months

pedi told us to CIO

If ds keeps waking up for night feedings.  He says he doesn't need them anymore and that most parents wait till 5 months & that's too long.  He specifically mentioned the Ferber method.  Now I haven't read or researched, but I know from what I have read that Ferber doesn't recommend this until at least 4 mos.  He also told us not to feed ds longer than 15 mins at each feeding and that ds could take 7-8 oz per feeding, but he's such a lazy "snacking" type eater that after 15 mins he's only had 3 oz & wants to take a break.  I guess the doc is basing all of this more on ds's weight than his age b/c he's already over 16 lbs, but I don't think he's emotionally ready for any CIO stuff.  I know this board is in general anti-CIO but dare I ask what you think of this advice?

Re: pedi told us to CIO

  • My pedi told me to CIO at the 4 month wakeful period. I was surprised she said this. I'm not sure I could do it at 4 months. I definitely couldn't do it a 2 months. My husbands SIL and cousin told me to let my baby CIO at 6 weeks or he will be spoiled. I guess people all have their own prospective! I would give it a lot more time.

  • Wait, wait, why isn't your 2 MONTH OLD allowed to eat at night?  A 2 month old is SUPPOSED to eat at night.  wtf?
  • I whole-heartedly disagree with a 2 month old CIO. Personally, I think it is mean and cruel. My coworker did it with her kid at 7weeks and just doesn't understand why I haven't given my son "tough love."

Do what you are most comfortable with. Also, I may look into switching pedis. But again, do what you feel is best.

  • Honestly... I would change pedi's.  I would be very uncomfortable with a dr. who suggests CIO or Ferber before 4 months.
  • I think your doc is crazy and you should feed your child how much HE wants whenever he wants. Although there is nothing wrong with offering a paci at night to see if he just wants to suck. If he rejects it, then feed him!

  • And my pedi said some babies STTN at 2 months and some still need feedings. Each baby is different.
  • I know someone who's Dr. told them to CIO at 6 weeks and she did! Poor child!

Anyway, I am not totally against CIO...however, to me, it is a last resort if your child has a sleeping problem. I also wouldn't do it until at least 4 months.  My DS has been up all night for the last few weeks and I was getting to the point where I said that I am just going to have to let him CIO. I ordered "The No Cry Sleep Solution" and I should get it on Monday in the mail. I am going to try that first before I try CIO. He also had a better night last night, so maybe things will change and get better (I can only hope!)

From what I read, once they reach 11 lbs, they shouldn't  need to be fed at night from a nutrition standpoint. However, if he is hungry, I would feed him. They also go through growth spurts and need more to eat during those times.  DS just recently stopped eating during the night. All of a sudden he went from 2 feedings per night at the beginning of Dec. to one feeding a night by the end of Dec. (He usually eats anywhere b/t 3 AM and 5 AM).

  • Get The Baby Sleep Book by Sears.

It will change the way you look at your baby and his/her sleep habits.

Seriously. I'm mad I didn't read it before I had Will. It makes everything make SO much sense now.

  • I still BF whenever my little guy wants to.  It makes both of us happy, so why not? :)  He usually STTN anyway, but didn't start to until maybe a month ago.  The one thing I've learned through almost 3 years of pediatrician appts?  Go with YOUR gut!  Trust them with actual medical advice, but do lots of your own research so that you can make informed decisions from their suggestions about everything else.
  • DD still sometimes feeds one time at night. I feel that if she is crying she is trying to tell me something. Her cry is her only way to communicate her needs. I will never let her CIO. But that's just me....A lot of people have had success with Ferber method but your LO is really too young.?

I would do whatever feels right to you. Your pedi doesn't have to hear you LO crying!?

  • So if this ped is basing it on weight then would he also suggest an 11 or 12 lb newborn to STTN?  I would think that type of suggestion should be based on age AND weight.
  • I personally think 2 months is way too young and that most 2 month olds still need to eat at night and also don't have the ability to self soothe.  I always think about how scary this world must be to a young infant and the only thing they know how to do to express themselves is to cry and to ignore that cry at this young an age, I just couldn't do it.

Also, if you do end up doing CIO/Ferber I really recommend reading up on it first...I believe the book is called "Solve Your' Child's Sleeping Problems" or something like that.

  • I would get a second opinion from another dr. Maybe this dr isn't the right one. Is there another in the practice? Each baby is different and has a different feeding schedule. There's no one answer.
  • i think it's really not your pedi's business how you parent..
    Wheee!
