Babies: 0 - 3 Months

s/o STTN

Is there any correlation between babies sleeping longer if they are formula fed?

My LO doesn't sleep more than 2 hours at a time at night, even swaddled. I BF but can't help but think that he isn't getting full enough to sleep 3, even 4 hours. I know he isn't going to be sttn for awhile, but I'd think he would have longer stretches by now!!

  • I don't know...DS is BF and STTN most of the time since 6 weeks and 5 hrs. before that starting at 1 month.  He eats all the freaking time during the day, though and isn't a big napper.

  • I don;t know if there is any correlation, but for my ds, he did start sleeping better when he was formula fed starting 2 weeks ago. But he also had an allergy to my bm (or something in it) that made him cry and not want to go to sleep. It does get better I promise...

  • Nope.  Every baby is different.
  • i switched to formula at 10wks and my LO is still not STTN. I think it just depends onthe baby. Though we do get a 7-8 hrs stretch. In bed by 7:30pm and then he wakes up around 2:30am to eat.

  • DD is ebf and has been sttn since 5 weeks when pedi gave us the ok to stop waking her every 3 hours to eat.

That said, its not that they aren't getting full enough with BM, its that BM is digested faster so the are hungry sooner.

  • Are you co-sleeping? Baby J SUCKED at sleeping and I finally gave in and him and I slept in the spare bed for a few weeks. Instantly he was sleeping 4-5 hours! And when he was hungry I rolled over, gave him my boob and went back to sleep. We are now using formula and have been since he was 2 months old - my supply tanked from lack of calorie intake - and he is now in his own crib, sleeping great. Some nights he will go from 8 to 5am and some nights he will still wake up at 2 but I am not complaining. He is now close to 14.5 pounds, too.

All babies are different and keep us moms on our toes :)

  • We still don't STTN and we started solids, BF supplemented FF etc.
