Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Am I making him chunky??

everyone constantly tells us ds is a chunky monkey - at first I thought it was cute.  Not so much anymore.  He is 4 months old and weighs just under 16 pounds.  Here's the thing though - I only feed him breastmilk, on demand.  It's not like I am giving him sugar water or even giving him solids of any kind.  But I will admit to developign a nasty sweet tooth since I delivered him - no joke I eat junk food every single day.  Is that carrying through my breastmilk to him?  I hope not - I will feel awful for letting myself indulge so much.  But when else can you eat pretty much whatever you want and still lose weight?!?

  • DS was 16 lbs 11 oz this week at his 4 month.  I have been through the ringer with the IL's family (I posted 2 weeks ago when DH's aunts were walking around referring to DS as "the fat baby" and making really rude comments).  To me, he looks healthy and the pedi says he's just fine, so I'm not worried.

  • Dont worry about it. My son was a big boy as a baby and people would make stupid comments to me about it too! Now he's 2 and at about the 50% for his height and weight.Once your son starts running non-stop, he will even out.  Keep feeding him like you are and he will be just fine!

  • 4 months and 16 lbs sounds fine to me. ?My DS was bigger than that at his 4 month and my Pedi was not concerned. ?BF babies gain weight very quickly at the beginning and tapper off towards the end of the first year. ?

  • Lydia is exactly right.  BF babies do gain weight quicker in the first 6 months and then begin to even out with formula fed babies towards the end of their first year.  My DD weighed 17.5 lbs at 4 months, and is 19 months now and weighs 23.3 lbs.  She was BF for 15 months.  She actually lost 2 lbs between her 15 month and 18 month appt. because she is so active now.  Please don't listen to anyone calling your baby chunky.  People are ignorant and you are doing a great job!
  • Stop worrying.  Babies are supposed to be chubby, and what they weigh the first year of life has no correlation to whether they'll be overweight later in life.  At his 4 month appt DS was 15lbs even, and he's a little slim (50% for weight, 85% for height, so he's a long boy) so your DS sounds good.  Stop worrying and enjoy your chubby-cheeked baby!
