The first bill we were sent was $75k and insurance was not covering it. I about died. But they hospital went back with insurance and we only ended up paying our in network out of pocket max for DS, which was $1500. I was okay with that.

The NICU bill was $115k. At first we thought we owed nothing then we got slapped with $3500. my co-pay is 20% not to exceed $3500 so $3500 it is!! Yikes.
That sucks! I'm sorry. Hospital bills suck and they're so overly priced. Our bill was just over a million, but we really were blessed that we're double insured.

I would check into Medicaid... at first they said that ours would not qualify and we would owe $30,000. I cried. It fricking turns out that if I didn't go back to work they would be fully covered... I was trying to figure out what to do and was still on the fence. I didn't go back to work... they were then covered because they were "disabled" (they were just feeders and growers) and because of one income. (Granted my income was $33,000 for me so it was a no brainer) but I would cont. to check it out... call the hospital as well... I am not covered and still had about $5000 in bills for me and they are giving me 20% break... so it doesn't hurt to call. Best wishes I know how gut wrenching it can be when figuring all this out!
Call the hospital and tell them that you can't pay the entire bill. Our hospital cut 20% off our bill when I called without much hassle at all. I've heard of hospitals writing off over 40% of a bill before!
You can also set up a payment plan so you can stretch it out over several years.
Holy crap I know! We have been getting them for months now! 2 weeks in the NICU! UGH! I feel so bad for others who were down there longer. There was a couple who's baby was in the NICU for a year in my NICU!
Re: just got my nicu bill.....feeling a little sick
OMG, our NICU bill was $100k. If I had to pay 20%...::shudder::
Thankfully my bill was only $65.
If I had to pay 20% I would be throwing up for sure!
Not all babies qualify. They have to be extremely low birth weight (something in the 2 pound range).

Our NICU bill was $230,000. We paid $250. A bargain for sure...
You should have an out of pocket maximum, usually 500.00 or so. Even with 80/20. My bill was 189,000.00. We only paid like 2,000.00

I hate medical bills. This is one of the reasons I'm glad that DH is in the military!
I remember how I felt when I got the bills for my first D&E (that were almost as much as when my son was born)! It was like adding salt to the wound!
I'm sorry you're dealing with bills on top of all the stress involved!
