DS has RSV

We took him to one doctor and she said it was "just a cold", then when he had a 45 minute coughing fit we went to the better doctor in the practice (he is a jerk, but knows what he is doing).  He listened to Logan's chest for 1 second and said it was RSV, he did the test and sure enough that is what he had.  It is so sad to see him cough so hard.  He has to use an inhaler a few times a day and it breaks my heart.  The doctor said he may be coughing until Easter.  It is exhausting.  I bring this up for another reason though.  He isn't eating very well, and is now up all night to eat.  He is only eating maybe 2oz at a time, and I am worried he isn't getting enough.  The doctor said this would happen, but we are so tired from being up every hour.  Did anyone introduce rice cereal a little early??  I probably won't do it without the doctor's consent, but I was wondering if it was even an option to call and ask about it.

Re: DS has RSV

  • Michele,
I'm sorry. I hope he gets better before Easter, that is horrible. Hang in there. Not sure about the solids, call the jerk pedi.

  • Aw, your poor little guy! I hope he feels better soon.

  • I'm sorry. I'm no expert, but my daugther has RSV too, and in the beginning, she was eating like that. I think it's because they're congested. She goes from breast to bottle, but only wants bottles right now because they're easier for her. Does he drink from a bottle? I wouldn't do rice cereal yet, but it's up to you and your doctor. Maybe get a nipple with a faster flow- he can get more milk in a shorter time? I sure hope he feels better soon.

  • I'm sorry!! RSV sucks- my son had it last month. Thankfully the cough didn't last nearly as long as I thought it would, he was feeling better after 1 week, and then the cough went away probably 2-2.5 weeks after it started. So hopefully it will be just as quick for you. He also had a decreased appetite, the doc said this would happen. Just suction out his nose often. Hang in there!
